I've been doing some reading on SKSBoards about Murrays spring-loaded SKS firing pin and some of the issues that people have been reporting with Berdan primed ammo and "popped primers".

I've also been having this problem, and Murray has recommended that people stop using Berdan primed ammo.

Here's the thing, I have no idea how to tell which 7.62x39 ammo sold in Canada is Boxer primed.

Is Czech steel cased surplus Berdan or Boxer primed?

Cheap surplus is Berdan. I have used a lot of it in a variety of rifles (SKS & CZ) and have not had any problems. I have not noticed anyone else having problems, either.

The surplus ammo has strong primer cups, so they a e less likely to slam fire than ordinary Boxer primers, so Berdan should be a bit better.

What problems are blamed on Berdan?

Decades of making x39 for these guns, they know what they are doing.

Spring loaded firing pin is only needed if you are using soft primers.

Just about all surplus, older, or some european ammo is berdan. Pretty well all the new, north american is boxer, not sure about newer euro stuff, but basically keep your existing firing pin clean and as long as you don't have it sieze up you don't really need one with a spring.

In addition to strong primer cups in issue ammunition, SKS and AK rifles have flat ended firing pins, which also contribute to reduced risk of slamfires.

Compare the firing pin you have now to your stock one, I suspect your new one may be sharper causing your issue.

Asking people to stop using surplus is just silly, they need to manufacture a better product, not tell people to use one type of ammo only.
