7.62x39 bolt action inquiry.

hi, i bought the ruger american ranch in 7.62x39, but it comes standard using the mini-30 mags, which are rare and expensive. i know you can convert the rifle to adapt to AR mags using the magwell conversion kit. but, i can't find anywhere that'll sell it toe me. ruger said to go through their Canadian distributors but that didn't work. the other authorized agent (Gravel) said they only do warranty work parts. bottom line: how can i buy the magwell conversion kit for this rifle in Canada? any ideas? thx for the help!jr

jrshooter - might get you no-where - perhaps give SnapShots in Quebec a call? Some years ago, there was a couple Ruger Warranty places in Canada - I needed some Ruger parts - all of them directed me to SnapShots - as if at that time, that they were the only one to be able to get / order parts from Ruger in Canada. But might all be changed now, since I understand that Gravel Agencies is now the main warranty centre for Ruger in Canada - not SnapShots, any more??? Over the years I have bought the offset Ruger scope rings, a recoil pad for a Ruger No. 1 rifle and an extractor collar for Ruger 77 bolt action rifle - all was from SnapShots - but all like more than, say, three years ago.

Wrenchbender, let me know how she shoots when you get to the range? I know x39 is by no means designed for precision, I want something to complement my modded SKS with better accuracy and option of hunt ability. I will be running it in a scout configuration and I'm rock steady about interchangeable magazines. Thanks everyone for the input, any idea how the the BCL compares to the Ruger in terms of reliability and accuracy, strictly pertaining to the two platforms mentioned above?

Is your goal to be able to use 10 round pistol mags? Because those might not be legal once the OIC amnesty ends. Something to consider. (Long story short, there needs to be a commonly available handgun for the handgun limit of 10 to apply, and all the handguns that take AR mags were banned by OIC and thus no longer commonly avaliable.)

If you're happy with 5 round mags then carry on. Hope you can find what you're looking for.

Regardless of the legal ramifications of AR mags in the pistol variety, AR mags generally suck trying to feed 7.62x39.

Rifles I'd look for in order of my preference:

- CZ600 trail
- CZ527 (used market)
- Ruger American Rifle
- Howa (? - I have no experience with them)

Based on my experience with a BCL Bison in .223, I cannot recommend laying out ~$1000 for one, regardless of caliber.

I bought a Ruger American Ranch in 762x39 and dropped it into a LSS Gen 2 MDT stock for a Ruger American.

I use 6mm ARC AICS magazines.

It's a light, low recoil, laser beam with 123gr hand loads and is decently accurate with surplus ammo I'd say 1.5 - 2in @ 100 with surplus.

Did the PLR16 get squashed too? Damn another one of muh babies bites the dust. I don't mind 5 rds in a bolt action rifle though, I'm enthusiastic about having many platforms with interchangeable magazines, its the prepper in me.

Certainly a consideration regarding the suckiness of x39 in ar mags. Just how sucky though? My bubbad sks isnt inoperable, how bad can it be in a bolt action?

How much are you into her for?

I bought all the MDT stuff during their Black Friday sale , so it was all a steal.

All in - rifle, MDT stock/magazines/accessories = $1250.

I'd look for a CZ 527 (used) and there's also the new CZ 600--Tesro and Tenda are two major stocking dealers for CZ. The Ruger is very decent as is the Howa. Hard to beat the all steel CZ 527, especially if you find one with lottery wood. They are the last of the old world style rifles.

AR box mags are hit and miss.

Some may run fine with repetition, while some may only run fine some of the time, and 10 round pistol mags are notorious for sometimes (probably most) needing to be down-loaded to 6 or 7 rounds to feed.
When they run fine you'll be happy, when they don't you'll want to pull your hair out.

I'll take a properly made 5 round mag designed specifically for the 7.62x39 taper any day of the week over the STANAG mag for that caliber.

I had a CZ527. It was a super nice gun. The wood and finish was awesome, however the best feature was the two stage trigger. The magazines were great although they are hard to find now.

My biggest knock was the bolt handle clearance, I even upgraded the bolt handle as I found my hand would always scrape up against the scope.

The CZ600 looks great, but its unfortunate that CZ doesnt offer the 600 Lux in 762x39.

The Ruger American Ranch isnt as fancy of a rifle but is just as accurate and is still a hoot to shoot.

It is too bad they stopped making the 527..

The PLR16 isn't banned but it's only in 556 from what I can tell?

I'm also skeptical about whether the existence of the PLR is enough to keep AR pistol mags, because the mags were "designed or manufactured" for the Rock River Arms LAR pistol, but who knows...

I have a Ranch in x39 and get MOA at ca 180yds (longest my range has) using Chi-Mil ammo. I have a Bushnell 4-12x40-DOA at 10x. The #3 shot on the right was due to my rest moving, result was 2" group.
Woulda been close to 1.5" otherwise. The 'circles' are ca 2", and 100 yds are a bit better, Chi-Mil Surp too.

PS - The above shooting is OK for that DOA scope but could be better with a 'gooder' scope . . . 10x isn't much but OK for hunting I guess.
