If you were going to build/buy one, how would you do it?

There are the CZ carbines and the Mini Mauser carbines, the only drawback is they use a .311-.312 bore, so you coudln't take advantage of the versatility of the many .308 bullets- Which I woudl like to.

Maybe the easiest way woudl be to buy one of those rifles, and rebarrel to .308?

I was thinking along the same lines... ;)

Ended up buying CZ527, it's a great little thing as it is! I can use Hornady bullets (.310), cast my own (100-200 grn), pull the military ones, buy factory Rem or Federal. Don't forget about sweeeet milsurp...

I also remember reading about using .303 bullets but never tried in 7.62 CZ, only in Mosin-Nagant (.303 Sierra SMK worked well BTW) ...

IMHO If you consider re-barreling Mauser action for .308x39 it might be cheaper to do so with milsurp mauser with similar bolt head instead of buying $750+ CZ.

note for myself: try 308 bullets in CZ... why not? Norma makes 7.62x54 ammo with .307 180gn bullets and it's very accurate out of Mosin carbine. You never know!

I rebarrelled a Stevens 200 with a 7.62x39 (.308) barrel. I replaced the extractor claw with a bigger one which works well enough for me - it extracts the shell from the chamber, but usually fails to eject it - but this is perfect for collecting brass. You can get PPC bolt heads for Savages as well if you need the eject to work. Feeding works surprisingly well, so long as you don't load more than about 4 cartridges in the magazine: you can fit 6 or so, but that binds up the system.

The barrel itself started out as a winchester model 70 30-06 1 in 10 take off which was set back and re-chambered in 7.62x39, and threaded for a Savage action. This is a very fast twist for this cartridge, especially with varmint bullets, but it seems to work well nonetheless. The SKS is 1 in 9.5 IIRC

Anyway, it works great for me. It puts 110 gr VMAXs into 3/4", and digests surplus as well, although 4" accuracy isn't so exciting

Prosper, I thougth about your project, but IIRC you had some extraction/ejection issues, which would cewrtinly affect my enjoyment of the rifle. Interesting point about the PPC bolt head, I hadn't thought of that at all, but it makes sense.

I'm in the process of building one on a m95 action All i have left to get is a custom extractor and grind it down for the cartridge I also need the follower spring and block then I'm done:)

I had one built on an M1896 Swede receiver and a VKT bbl from an M91/30. Both guns were already pooched beyond redemption in their original guises.

The 7.62x39 can be made to shoot with hand loads. My rifle also liked AE 7.62x39

prosper, who did the Savage barrel for you? I am really interested in such a conversion given that I now have a 223 and the mag would be ideal for the short Russkie.

Jerry

I got it from from the sharp shooter supply guys ages ago. I'm not sure if they still make these conversion barrels anymore, nevermind the issues exporting barrels from the States
