7.62x39 bolt rifle

In a nutshell the finish on them is horrible, they have been known to creatively disassemble themselves (nice word for blowing up) and they are over priced for what they are and for where they are from.

IMHO buy a nice Russian SKS or save the money for a Savage/Stevens.
 
Where did you hear about them blowing up?

And the finish on my 103 isn't all that bad, nothing you shouldn't expect from a $300 rifle. Thats the problem that I see with people and this rifle, they expect a $700 1/8 moa wonder gun out of a $300 chinese rifle, there a good gun for what you buy.

Ok, well it didn't say them blowing up there, a couple guys said stuff loosened off on them, thats really it. (BTW I saw those threads already, It seems that some people got bad rifles, and some got good rifles. Maybe I was just in good fortune to get a good one)

Oh and the $700 1/8 moa gun, well lets just say that that gun only exists between when I fall asleep at night and when I wake up in the morning.
 
About the blowup: That's all I needed to see and Wow, Glad that guy didnt' get badly hurt......and he really does look like Drew Carey...exept with powder burns on his face.

To be fair I often have the same waking dream.
Free float the barrel, and a bit of polish on the trigger...yah never know. :D
 
i was exploring the possibility of building a custom rifle in 7.62x39mm, based on a Savage action with a Shilen match barrel. i figured if i could get at least around 1MOA then i would have an uber plinker with super cheap ammo.

after speaking to mysticplayer and doing more research, im convinced that it would have been a futile effort: apparently the main detriment to 7.62x39mm accuracy is not the guns, but the crappy quality milsurp ammunition.
...and if you are going to go through the trouble of reloading for it, then with the same effort you could reload for anything - and have far better options in other chamberings.

i cant help but think that the exact same failure would have been far less catastrophic in, for example, a Remington 700 action.
life is too short to take risks like this.
 
Apparently they dont' handle Gas too well ;)

I think most modern actions even older Model 98's would of done better. Just speculation since we dont' know all the details with that blowup.

About a convertion, Im thinking a Stevens 200 in .308 could be converted for fairly cheap (200$ ish) if you can find a smith to do it who happens to have the reamer. No rebarrel needed.

according to Jerry (mysticplayer) there is not enough meat in the barrel to do the conversion. theres also a problem with 7.62x39mm ammo not being .308 bullet diameter, but .312:
You can't rebarrel a 308 factory barrel to a 7.62X39. There simply is not enough barrel thread/shank to cut unless you have a no taper barrel. Ruger Mini 30 uses a 308 barrel but accuracy is best described as AK47 grade. I think the surplus ammo has more to do with this then anything. I wouldn't want to stuff oversized bullets down a 308 bore.

and like i said, the ammo itself is a huge limiting factor in accuracy - and if you are going to be reloading then why not just reload for .308 instead?

if you are hellbent on one then it seems the cheapest way to get a decent 7.62x39mm rifle would be to buy a chamber adapter from this guy:

i would be more inclined to try this than one of the deathtrap Norinco rifles.
 
Hey how come this is turning into a Savage post? Remember you also have to change the bolt head on a Savage conversion.I bought my JW 103 just to shoot the milsurp ammo .Lasts longer out of a bolt action then the SKS.

Does the 103 have a chrome bore?

As Norinco SKS has a chrome bore, and this makes it a better choice for durability IMHO.
