I had bought a case of Romanian 7.62x39 FMJ and was wondering if it was copper washed steel or lead bullets. I didn't notice anything on the label. How can you tell if your not sure? THANKS....

I think the magnet trick is not the best way to determine if it's a lead or steel core... If it's a lead core within a steel jacket, the magnet will still sitck to it...

Pull a bullet and section it. If it is standard M43 with a steel core, you'll find it. The jacket is most likely clad steel.

same i have this stuff ^^ but check the case some Romanian are in brass not steel ^^ if your recupering the brass for the scrapyard you can make some little money

Yes there is a M43 on the crate. What does the designation "M" and"43" stand for? Do you know what other designations are also used.

search the page for M43,
43 was the year it was designed, i believe the M just meant military, like how so many other guns/cartridges start with M. but it may have some special meaning in russian that im not familiar with.

also might be of interest to you, headstamp guides for many 7.62x39

The quick way to test a round is with a sidecutter on the bullet. A lead bullet will dent or cut. Steel just won't move.

Some Romanian is lead core. I have some.

There is a letter on wooden case label that differs between steel core and lead core.

the Romanian stuff that I have is a lead core, steel insert and copper jacket on the outside ... it's funny cause you'd think a 2 step process would be cheaper than a 3 step process even for those behind the iron curtain.
