7.62x39 in the bush

Look, when something jumps out of thick bush and charges real fast towards you in a close range, a rifle might be a little too slow.

a rifle is no slower then a shotgun. practice practice. at the ranges you use your SKS, and the effective range of a defender shotgun, why don;t you look at a marlin guide gun? more accurate then an SKS, more powerful then a shotgun, and you'd only have to carry one rifle. mine was plenty fast for hitting nasty things when I guided.

i must hunt in the wrong areas. it appears the prediters are waiting behind every tree. with all this self defence and packing multiple rifles i'm not sure how some people have time to hunt. i never seem to run into very agressive bears. there usually trying to run from me and i'm trying to shoot them for meat.

A friend of mine on this board was telling me about a griz shot with a 12 ga slug, it ran off, while later someone shot it again with good effect and they found the slug flattened against the rib, with little penetration. He did some tests with the Sabot bullet in the 12 ga, with good effect against wet newspaper.

Bottom line people succesfully hunting with M305, SKS and other Semi's are good for all of us who like guns and it gives us ammo to defeat the "not for hunting myth"

The slug thrower must have been 100+ yards away.
One of those objects are closer then they appear moments.
Griz Bears have that effect. :D

Personally I use 94 carbine with 170 grain flat points, I find the lever action less hassle, but a 7.62*39 150 gr handload would be pretty close,I don't think any angry critter would feel the difference :)

+2, as much as I love my SKS, my winny lever gets more walks in the woods...much less complicated IMHO.

I'm not really worrried about Grizz, there has been exactly one Grizz shot on the Island in the last hundred years, though it was last year. (So much for declining populations, their range is expanding which is not normally a sign of declining pops) The local blacks are genetically different than mainland blacks - smaller and stockier. It's the cougar populations that worry me.

If you need more than 5 shots, you can always get a Marlin lever gun with 7rd for the 45-70 or 9rd for a 44mag. 7.62x39 should be ok for a 'cougar stick' - plus you always got the bayonet for when, or if, it lunges at you.
