Looking at the various published loads for the 7.62x39, I see that most of them use the same powders as the 22 Hornet. Now, we all know lil gun is one of the best Hornet powders in existence ;) Has anyone tried this powder in a 7.62x39 load?

I have experimented with H110 and W296 with bullets from 123 to 180 gr.

The SKS is a lousy platform for high pressure experiments.
It blows the firing pin right back through the bolt.

Get a 98 Mauser.

I'm not trying to eke every last little bit of performance out of this round, I just want to load up a bunch of light varmint or pistol bullets up, and get some (hopefully) spectacular ground-squirrel & 'chuck kills at short-ish ranges. Plus, I have an almost unlimited supply of free, once-fired boxer brass

If you want to sell some of that brass, I would be happy to pay some money for it... Im always loosing my brass from my sks when shooting it afeild.

If you want explosive preformance, try some hornday 312" hpxtp pistol bullets, but they don't feed well, if at all in the sks.

I would like to get a mini mauser chamberd in 7.62X39.... I was hoping armrus was going to import some of the russian bolt guns in 7.62X39.. but every time I asked they said maby in the future. Hell I would even settle for a handy rifle.

I was experimenting with some 180 grain cast lead slugs, with 7 grains of hs6 behind them... They were verry quiet... but I never did shoot them much for groups, or cronograph them.

yeah, a .308 bolt rifle in 7.62x39 would be killer :)

You do NOT want the Norinco one though. They have one a milarm here in Edmonton. It's a CZ knock-off, and is extremely cheaply made. The stock is poorly fitted, and made out of what feels like balsa wood, the action feels like it's riding on sandpaper, the trigger is horrible, and the blueing looks pretty half-assed. It would be all right if it were priced the same as the SKS, but they want $400 for it

Oh yeah Im never ever going to buy another norinco firearm... except maybe another sks. :) I do have a yugo sks, the grenade lanching one.. you can shut the gas off to shoot without loosing brass... But I may as well have a bolt gun then... That and Im afraid to ding/scratch it up.

You want to be very, VERY, V E R Y careful using such a small charge of HS6. Your load has to be down around 25% load density which IMHO is too low. I NEVER go below 30% load density. I also drill out the flash-hole and use magnum primers to ensure reliable ignition.

If you want to experiment with subsonic 7.62x39, please try more suitable (bulky) powders like N310, Red Dot, N320, W231 or 700X. Also see my website on safely loading subsonics.

Light, very light loads in a medium case have always been tricky. Knew of a guy who did the same with 223. My advice to you is to do what he did, when you load these featherlite loads is, if it is safe to do so elevate the barrel once the case is chambered. And tap the stock, this is to ensure the powder charge is nearest the primer. Do not shoot at a downward angle!!!
Ensure this is the last thing you do before firinig!
Definitely a load to be extra careful with....

I tryed those loads in all positons... never noticed a problem... and yes I was using magnum winchester primers.. I also tryed lower charge weights of 1680(15grains I think) But the hs6 gave allot better accuracy, allot less noise too.

My reasoning at the time was the 45colt, wich with some of the 200 grain and lighter bullets/cowboy loads, has basicaly the same case capacity... and those loads have about the same amount of powder in it.

Not to jump in late , but , how did you find an unlimited supply of once fired brass ?
Lack of affordable brass is the only reason I haven't started reloading for this cartridge .
Ive only found expensive new brass that is too costly .
Thanks - Rick

at the indoor range where I shoot, they prohibit steel core ammo, and sell Federal 7.62x39 for ~$10 a box. So whenever I shoot there I sort through the discards, and grab ~20-50 brass per session

Anyone got any ideas about the CZ527 Carbine chambered for 7.62x39?
