In talking with a buddy about suppressed rifles and sub sonic rounds like the whispers and blackouts I had a thought would it be possible to take say a savage action and custom chamber it to 7.62x39 necked to 308 but have it throated for longer bullets? The soviet case firing 200+gr Amax or other target bullet should be or close to subsonic if I'm correct in thinking. This would be cheap minus the custom barrel but an easy and simple way to get a 30cal quiet target rifle for playing with. Just neck size the 39 case to 308 and go I believe. Any thoughts or am I just way off the mark?

Yes, I've done it and it works. I use the PT&G reamer throated longer for .308 barrels. I can fire military .310/.311 surplus anytime in them. It does work perfectly for long heavy bullets too.
BTW, we're not allowed suppressors as citizens here in Canada, so it won't be that quiet.

For the heavies 9", 10". Overkill for surplus rounds IMO, but still shoot well.
For surplus and 125 to 150gr 14" works best. My 788 with a Shilen 13" twist fires 125 to 168gr equally well and getting 1" groups with Chinese surplus.

I have a Stevens/Savage I'm thinking of chambering to 7.62x25 Tokarev. This will also make a nice quiet round with heavies.
