Hi all,

Sorry if this info is already covered.

I grabbed a dial caliper today, and im wondering if anyone can help guide me through measuring my fired 7.62x51 cases? Fired from my DA socom 18.

My understanding is that I can get an idea of whether my headspace is safe based on the overall length measurement of my fired cases? Is this correct?

If so, what would be considerd a safe range?

Any other tips and advice regarding headspace on an m14 type rifle would be greatly appreciated.

I do plan on buying go/ no go gauges but in the mean time i was hoping to make sure may rifle is safe to fire surplus 7.62x51.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply.
I've seen that tool. Ill be picking one of those up.

I just thought maybe I could just compare OAL between a fired case and an unfired case for a rough idea.

A case gauge is a big help.Fired cases (with the valve turned off ) should drop all the way in.

Also if you reload for a semi you should check each case in a case gauge to make sure it will chamber easily.

Another thing you can do is take off the op rod and jam some gauges between the bolt lug and the receiver with a gauge up in your chamber

If it comes back as 1.640, you got a real shooter on your hands (like mine)

My favourite is the guy who shaved the tip of his firing pin a bit so it wouldn't "shoot the casings as far into the chamber". Seems legit to me.

I applaud people who do such fine research, I've got my first book about guns and I'm reading it now:
