Long time lurker , just getting back into the sport after a long time hiatus. I,ve noticed it's mostly the Norc stuff available plus the Austrian stuff. Is there any british,Israeli,Australian or SA stuff available?..can someone point me in the right direction? cheers

Canadian Tire (Leduc). Best I've found. Comes in at under $0.57/round last crate I bought.

Saw another store (Canadian Tire - Wetaskiwin), forgot to check the price, but they sell it in bulk bags.

I have been shooting surplus 7.62 since 2007.

I have never seen British, Israeli, or Australian ammo offered for sale.
I haven't seen SA for 5 years or more. Was buying 140 rnd battle packs. Not the greatest ammo IMHO
Norc ammo is still around but appears to be drying up. Get it when you can, it's good stuff.
The Austrian stuff seems to be the norm these days. Haven't tried it myself.
I've lucked into IVI on occasion but in very limited quantities.

You are mainly going to find Norc (Chinese) or Austrian right now. Check as some of the Dealers offer free shipping. I lucked out and found buried in the garage a crate of mixed 7.62 Nato (Czech, German, Israeli and some other odd mfg) about 1200rds.

The Hirtenberger at Tradex is the best deal going right now. Its brass, reloadable and accurate. Bonus is Tradex is fast and reliable. Otherwise go to the trade shows you might just get lucky

Austrian surplus is among the very best ever manufactured, and the brass is outstanding quality. Buy a good supply of it while you can.

thx for all the replies, I'm going to try the Austrian stuff @ tradex. Rummaging around I found about 600 rounds of IVI packed in waterproof belts and about 200 of brit .308 frm the 80's

That IVI in the rubber/nylon bandolier should actually be DA brass depending on the year. I had two boxes of it and it shot great, still have the brass marked 64 and 65. Save the brass for reloading.

Hirtenberger isn't bad, can have some corrosion, there is berdan and boxer primed out there so make sure you know what you are getting if reloading is important. It's not NATO spec but still good surplus.

Could you elaborate on that?

From what I know after quite a bit of research on Hirtenberger , and having visited the factory in the 80s: The ammo is indeed NATO spec because the tooling was always used to manufacture for NATO contracts, but the local output is not STAMPED as such because Austria is not a NATO country so there was no requirements for it.

IVI was shipped in cardboard boxes or cloth bandoliers. DA was in the green vinyl peel back "pudding cups".

NATO spec ammo has the cross in a circle mark on the headstamp. Hirtenberger does have this mark and Austria is not a member of NATO.

Yeah, that argument falls way short.

Everyone that sells this ammo specs it as NATO (https://www.marstar.ca/dynamic/product.jsp?productid=87529) , and Hirtenberger did manufacture NATO spec ammo for NATO countries.

Well it is 7.62x51 it's just not NATO standard.
NATO specs the brass casing to be a specific hardness and thickness, the Hirt is not made to that spec. The last bunch of IVI cases I weighed were 200-205 grains, Hirt boxer primed was 170 grains IIRC. I'll go weigh some again to confirm. 170 grains was on par with 308 Winchester commercial brass BTW. It's also much softer then NATO brass, more along the lines of commercial 308 hardness.
If Hirt made export 7.62NATO, which I'm sure they are capable of, it would be to NATO specs and the circle/cross would be stamped on it.
Well I was off a bit, Hirt is lighter then 308 Win commercial brass....memory is running low lol. Gap was correct though. All weighed with primers in so the true weights would be a couple grains less.
