7.62x51 vs. .308

Speaking strictly about bolt guns here. DCRA shooter have rifles chambered in .308 in many flavours. .308 Obermeyer, .308 Win, .308 CanRG. In many different actions. These same rifle are shot at Bisley using 7.62 RG ammo. Only in the last few years has the ammo changed from regular RG 7.62 ball ammo to RG 7.62 match.
Ever since the change from .303 to 7.62 Canadian target rifle shooters used 7.62 in .308 rifles right up to the time we changed over to handloaded ammo.

This thread comes along every 9 days.......Same stuff like 87 octane from shell and 87 octane from esso .I have being using either/or in my 700P and my 12FV 223/556 762/308 with NO problems

Oh ok, so shooting NATO ammo out of a .308 boltgun won't do any damage? I remember someone saying that only a mil-spec (7.62x51) rifle could take .308, but not the other way around.

Rohann,

I have been shooting off and on for 20 years + - I have shot the cheapest stuff I could get my hands on in those days up to federal supreme, I have never ever had a problem shooting it from mini 14's, winchesters, remingtons, cil 950's, parker hales, weatherbys.....And for 5 bucks a box why would you want to shoot anything else;)

I have pumped out the mil/civilian spec ammo in my Fn49/Mini14 with 0 probs as well.....The only ammo you should not use in semis is the 'high energy' ammunition from hornady, federal etc etc the hunting stuff 'light mag'
