7.62x39- that's the way i've always heard it called- 30 cal russian usually refers to the 7.62x54 mosin cartridge, but i have rarely heard the term 30 cal russian short- but i've also heard that when referring to 7.62x25 pistol ( tok)cartridge, which makes more sense- btw it actually mikes out at .311

It is and has been the standard Warsaw Pact military cartridge for the past 60 or so years. It uses a 123 grain .311" bullet with a 39mm long case. Velocities run around 2400fps. Used in the SKS carbine and the AK-47.
American made ammo, used mostly in the Ruger Mini-30, uses a .308" bullet. Using American made factory SP ammo in a Soviet Bloc firearm is safe, but the accuracy suffers a great deal due to the bullet diameter. Using milsurp ammo with the larger bullet in a Mini-30 can be done, but it's not a good idea.
There's lots of info on the cartridge on-line.

7.62 X 51

7.62 X 51 is the metric designation for 308 Winchester sometimes it is called 7.62 NATO. 308 is the dia of the bullet, just like 45 ACPis 451. The rest of the blah blah is the overall length of the case. Therefore a 7.62X39 will not fit into a rifle chambered for 7.62X51.

The 7.62 X39 is the round used in AKs and SKSs. If you need more info take a look at a good reloading manual like Hornadys.

Just to clarify, .308 Win and 7.62 x 51 mm NATO are interchangable but not the same cartridge. The headspace specifications are slightly different. When we set up an M-14 or an M-1 Garand in .308/7.62 we set the headspace in the middle of the two specifications so you can use either cartridge. If the customer specifies, we will set the rifle up for either 7.62 x 51mm (NATO) or .308 Winchester. A rifle set up for .308 will shoot commercial .308 ammunition more accurately than 7.62 NATO and vise versa.

It should be noted that many eastern bloc labels include the designation "M43" or "7.62 - 43". M43 was the original soviet designation for 7.62x39.

7.62x39-7.62x51-7.62x54-7.62x54R Now that should throw a monkey wrench in things

I thought the 762x39 was a copy of the German ww2 8mm 'kurz' or 'short' ???

There is only one 7.62x54mm cartridge and that's the old Rimmed round for the Mosin. It's called the 7.62x54mmR or 7.62x54R.
