7,62x51mm v .308win

ok
say i was to shoot out my .308 barrel, and i was going to rebarrel, would there be any advantages to rechambering to 7,62? like higher muzzle velocity?

There are only 2(+1/2) practical differences:
1) The .308 chamber is held to smaller tollerences (ergo higher pressures)
2a) 7.62mm must fall within standardized pressures to reliably operate MGs
2b) 7.62mm chambers are generally larger to facilitate reliable feeding & extraction during battlefield conditions.

The combination of 2a&b tends to lead to lower chamber pressures. However 7.62mm brass tends to have slightly heavier walls (increasing pressures for a given charge weight-handloaders beware-).

There is no difference in the exterior dimentions of the cartridge case.

so out of the same quality barrel, with same barrel lenght and same bullet weight the 308 will push a pill faster?

then how would you go about modifying your rifle so you can load more powder in your .308, to make it faster still?

Faster does not mean more accurate. A 155 bullet pushed out at 2850 will still be super sonic at 1000 yards. I have had 155 going out at just over 3000 fps, but found the best accuracy at 2940 fps in my rifle with a 30 inch barrel.

its not just a LR rig, its a hunting rig, and i tought that a faster bullet of the same weight would have a higher bc and therefore be more lethal?Just throwing ideas out there

A faster bullet of the same weigh would have higher energy (kinetic energy is porportional to Vsqrd) and it would be more lethal. Its BC would change little as its based mainly on bullet shape and density... there is a onlya slight dependence on velocity.

But its lethality depends entirely on your accuracy... you have to hit it

30.06 uses a long action right?
it aqll depends on the make of rifle.
However, if you are using the rig for hunting also, I wouldn't worry about the extra FPS that you would get out of the 30'06
Like NormB said, hit the critter in the right spot and he will go down with a 308, no problem....

Don't tell anybody that it's a WSM, tell them it's a .308.

The '06 usually goes in a "Standard" length action, a "long" action will acomodate H&H and Weatherby length cartridges.

No magnums?!?

You can't shoot .22WRM or .222 Remington Magnum (the equivalent of 5.56 NATO); but you could shoot .458 Lott or 7mm STW, because they don't have "Magnum" in their name?

no higher than .30cal and no magnums. At least thats what i get of it. Military range at St-Bruno. God knows why, the army just bought a ton of .338 timberwolf. Sucks, got a nice 1k range 12 minutes from home and i cant use anything decent other than 30.06 and 308. No, i do not consider 6br and .223 to be decent cartridges. 6.5-284 is getting there though

"6BR not a decent cartridge" man that was funny!   but hey! I guess your one of the most experience long range shooter on this board, I wont argue with you
