As usual, lebarons only had a powder I can't find any loads for. I found a load on the net for Siera 180grn over 55grn of win 760 but that seems a bit much. Anybody have a crossrefeence for win 760 with a SMK 174grn .311 in the 7.62x54r?
I load this caliber as well.
760 is a slow burning powder on par with IMR4350. I used 760 in recent loads but with 123gr bullets. I used 50gr even. I would recommend reducing this load to about 46-48 gr of win.760 with 174 gr bullets.
Its all guess work with this cal. No real data exists. So be careful and reduce powder even more if unsure.
Don't go to Lebaron!
Why not Andrew Higginson? At least he knows what he sells.
Also, I was told that when any rifle arrives to Switzerland, they must proof it with a 30% overload. Mosins don't blow up - their chambers deform. That left me wondering, how do they achieve 30% overload - there'd be no space in a cartridge for that.
I am going to order from higginson but I am not going to pay to ship 2lb of powder & I don't have the facility to store the 16 or so lbs I am going to eventually get yet. I could care lees if they don't know what they are talking about but it would be nice if they restocked more than once a year. Funny part is I drop in at epps once a month & spend so much time looking at the guns I forget to buy powder.
The Win 760 will only be suitable with 150gr and heavier bullets - the light stuff just will not get the pressure up high enough for a consistent burn. With powders with this rate of quickness, be careful to stay at or above the published minimum load.
hornady lists in their 7th ed as follows for 7.62x54 with 174 gr.
min 42.1 gr@2200fps
44.2@2300fps.
46.2gr.@2400fps.
48.2gr@2500fps
50.3gr.@2600fps.
MAX52.3gr.@2700fps.
Hope this helps you data for RN&BTFMJ
Well for anyone who wants to know, I tried 49grns with a 174grn SMK. Fairly accurate but had major soot o the cases. Looks like there is some room to up the load, might be worth playing with from a charge density perspective. seems like a fairly ignored powder.
