I have a Mosin Nagant that I want to use for hunting. I figured I would develop a good handload for it. However, here is my problem.

I ordered some through ### Int. and when it came to their place, it was 7.62x53r. This is Lapua brass. So I said, not what I need. (felt bad about it though:( ) I asked them if they could get 7.62x54r from Norma as I know they make it.

However, some one informed me that these two designations are the same brass. One refers to what the fins called it and the other to the Russian designation.

Can someone inform me as the whether these are the same or two different animals? I need to buy brass for this gun, surplus ammo isnt hunting ammo! Anyone??

Thanks

I believe the difference is in the diameter of the bullet used. The parent case is the same, but I believe the Finns rebarreled with a .308 diameter barrel instead of the 54R's .310-312 barrel.
