I'm buying some bulk ammo, and I don't want to be stuck with several thousand rounds of stuff that doesn't work as well as the other options. I will be shooting from a 1891/30 Mosin Nagant and a Yugo M48 mostly at 100 yards. Which ammo works best for you guys?

7.62x54R
147gr - Marstar $0.25/rd
148gr - Districorp $0.30/rd
150gr - Districorp $0.56/rd
164gr - Districorp $0.25/rd

8x57
170gr - Districorp $0.51/rd
198gr - Districorp $0.53/rd

It may be one of those things that I'll have to test out for myself, I realize that.

Thanks

Well the Hungarian Heavy Ball (it's actually a 183g pill) is accurate, doesn't make the bolt stick in a 91/30, but recoil is brutal.
The Czech stuff is also accurate, not quite as bad recoil wise, but makes the bolt stick pretty bad as it's laquered steel cases as opposed to the copper washed steel of the Hungarian.

The Igman 8mm they sell at Districorp is accurate but kind of dirty ammo. It has always gone bang for me. It is loaded hotter than North American ammo so ballistically it is better. I think for the 170 grain, it is 2700 ft/s muzzle velocity or something close to that. A good alternative to FedRemchester ammo.

i would try to find one that shots to the sights (or low so that the sights can be brought up).

i have found that any weight of bell (is this the same as igman???) shots high in my yugo M48.

my experience with the 7.62x54R in a M44 nagant is that they all shot about the same so the deciding point would be price. i haven't tried the czech though, but i will soon.

Maybe I'll just get a massive order from Districorp of 8x57, 7.62x54R, 7.62x51, 7.62x39 (I don't have a rifle in this yet but hopefully I will soon) and .303 British. I think if you buy over 5000 rounds they give a discount or something. That way I can mix it up a bit and try the different rounds. Too bad I have to spend close to $2000 to get the discount

With the 8mm, the M48 and the K98 that preceded it were intended to shoot a 196-198gr spitzer.

As for the Rooskie ammo, most refurb 91/30's got ew front sights for the 174gr or heavier ammo so it could be used with the bulk machine-gun ammo being made in the 1950's and 60's.

The lighter fodder works better in the semis though.

For the record, I handload my 54R with old Igman cases generally.
