So since im poor im getting a mosin setup for hunting. It shoots 2 inch groups from the irons at 100 yards, but POA and POI are off but rifle is capable of 2 inch groups at 100 yards so good enough to hunt with. Just need to aim a foot low at 100. Am working on getting a scout scope setup installed and this will help even more, already have the scope just need a secure mount.

What size game am I good to go with this cartridge? 7.62x54R

My dad says im good to go even on moose with good shot placement and the right ammo(but im also sure that crazy bastard would shoot a moose with a .22lr if that's what he had at the time and he was close enough).

I Will likely stick to bear and deer anyways but want to know what the upper end of game I can take with this rifle is.

Im going to try reloading for this gun with 150-180 grain softpoints.

Case capacity is between .308 and .30-06. With a soft point hunting bullet you are good for anything you are likely to hunt. The only North American animals it would be marginal on is bison and the great bears.

I think the 54r cartridge will take out anything from vaporizing a squirrel to elk. As for raising your POA to match POI try making a new front sight post.

I made one for my M44 using a small common nail and a piece of split pin spring. Paint it flat black and file it down until you POI comes up. This way you don't have to file down your original front post and you end up with a narrower front post.

Anything in Canada.

54R is in the .308 to 30-06 range for power, especially if you hand load.

There's nothing with fur and four legs in Canada you can't humanely hunt with that kind of power.

Thanks guys just wanted to make sure as I have little experience with the Russian cartridges. Most of my hunting has been done with my dads trusty old 30-30.

You can shoot anything with that rifle. Your dad is right. Shot placement is everything. It's the same as our. 308 Winchester and that's taken everything in NA. Not my first choice, but it will work just fine.

Wasn't my first choice either, but im poor, it was cheap. Any my dads health is failing him and he gave his guns to my uncle which lives out of province so I no longer have access to his 30-30.

I've shot numerous bears with a 7.62 x 54R and wouldn't hesitate for a second to shoot a moose or elk with one either.

It's got more horsepower than your 30-30, that's for sure.

Was surfing the net yesterday and stubbled across this pic, the women used a M39 finish nagant 7.62x54r, and took two shots to kill.

Most mosins shoot a bit high without the bayonet when shooting surplus 150gr ammo, but less high with the 203gr soft points. I compensate by adding a piece of heat shrink or wire insulator to the front sight to add a milometer, then slowly clip it down to center your shots. There are several longer/higher front posts you can purchase, and they work well too.

Hardest part is probably finding decent quality hunting ammo if you are not into reloading. Winchester, Hornady, S&B, and Norma make good stuff, just sourcing it can be an issue. I wouldn't use Prvi or any of the Russian stuff personally.

Im going to try and scope it but will consider this if the scope doesn't work out

Dont change sights yet, find or load some decent "heavy" for cal. loads and see if it dosn't drop P.O.I. right into the 3" high @ 100m. that will put you almost dead on @ 200m and 4-6" low @ 300m.
if your going to hunt with good ammo start your sighting process with it.
ps with heavy quality bullets , there's nothing on this continent you will have to worry about.

You can make a new front sight post using a finishing nail. I measured how tall I wanted it to be, stuck it in the drill press and made it into the shape I wanted using a file.

2 inch groups is very good!
