7.62x54R Non-Corrosive FMJ/Expanding?

Thanks, I'll have a look around.
What about hunting ammo? Even Winchester's stuff would do, I just need some cartridges for black bear hunting.

About the only non-military surplus, non-corrisive stuff I've found is the Sellier & Bellot and Igman stuff, both of which works well out of my 91/30 sniper.

As for where to find it, I imagine most gun shop would have it, or at least be able to get it.

I know Winchester makes some of the stuff but I can't get a hold of any through the local hunting store.
I'll have a look at the Sellier and Bellot stuff. Is it sold on those websites?

I don't trust districorp. They claim their 7.62x54R light hungarian ball to be non corrosive, but it is.

Thanks,
-Rohann

I have asked many gun stores about the win 7.62x54r ammo & new brass. I got blank stares at a few & one said the u.s .would not let it out of the country. I don't know who to believe as I got some brass out of buffalo arms, no problems.

Rohann,

The Winchester ammo is made by S&B, and is not available in Canada (or wasn't when I e-mailed Winchester a while ago, anyway). There is no such thing as milsurp 7.62x54 that isn't corrosive, regardless of what the advertisements say. Either use the civvy stuff, or just use hot water to clean your bore after shooting milsurp. The S&B is probably your best bet, as it's fairly cheap, truly non-corrosive, and reloadable (if that applies to you). I think you should be able to find S&B in any halfway-decent milsurp-type shop in your area.

Cheers,

S&B sounds like a good deal, as long as it isn't corrosive. The problem is, we don't have any halfway-decent milsurp-type shops in my area. I'll take a look around though and see if the hunting shop can order it in.
Oh and why wouldn't the US let it out of the country?

Thanks,
-Rohann

Rohann,

I don't think it's a question of the US letting it out, I think it's more of a marketing decision by the folks at Winnie.

isn't the winchester stuff being sold in the US repackaged S&B?

the S&B 180 grain stuff is accurate and works well on deer.

MiG25,

I've never seen the Winchester-branded stuff, but I've seen posts on some Yank gun forums saying that the cases are different. I would assume they meant other than the headstamp.

I don't think it would be economical for S&B to have two separate types of brass for the same calibre, so they likely are the same aside from markings.

Cheers,
Michael in Edmonton

Could you guys give me a Canadian website that sells the stuff? The hunting store here can only order in the common commercial stuff.

What about ordering in from the US? Is it legal?

I have steel plate tested this stuff and it is NOT CORROSIVE, I have also fired it through several Mosins including a 91/30 Sniper that I left un-cleaned for 3 weeks and there was NO EVIDENCE of it being corrosive. It is the ammo Districorp is selling.

The 7.62x54R boxes contained rounds with all the same headstamps 21 52. No evidence of primer sealant visible.
Powder weight averages 50.92g with a standard deviation of 0.363.
OACL averages 3.016" with a SD of .005.
Based on the numbers for powder weight and OACL it appears that the ammo is made on different machines but they appear to be fairly consistent. These numbers also represent a sample size of 20 rounds.

Well when I first got my Nagant the bolt and bore looked nearly brand new. I went out, shot it, and two days later cleaned it. The bolt face had a lot of rust on it and the bore wasn't exactly spotless either.

Any comments on the SIR stuff? Looks to be Winchester.

What was the headstamp on the stuff you fired?
You can get rust forming on bare metal pretty easily when you live close to a large body of salt water!

Can't comment on the Winchester stuff, I reload for the Mosin but it is factory Win, so it should be pretty good stuff.
