Hello, well I've strayed from my SKS obsession for awhile and I 'm now in the process of securing two Mosins, a M44 and a long rifle 91/30. I want to pick up some surp ball but don't know the grain of bullet that would best suit plinking. I haven't looked into the availability of the different wts. so I don't know if I'll even have a choice. Any suggestions? Thanks

buy whatever is cheapest, with the open sights on a mosin nagant i have not been able to tell any difference accuracy wise.

just be sure to know if its corrosive ammo if in doubt treat it as corrosive, any thing made /military stuff, or steel cases or such is 99% corrosve. clean well after shooting hot water ect.

I've used 150 grain .303 British bullets for reloading 7.62x54R and it worked well for me. I slugged my barrel first to confirm that .312" bullets would work first.

If you're going for milsurp ammo, look for 148 grain ammo.

311 sierra should work:D check the muzzle dia with a .308 bullet , it should be a loose fit , that says its not been rebarreled to .308 dia. compare the fit to a .308 or any domestic .30 cal barrel. weight of bullet , 150-170 gr range give or take 5 grains or so.

I have hungarian surplus ammo that comes in the triangle boxes. I've been told it isn't corrosive, but does anyone know for sure? I haven't cleaned my Nagant since I've been shooting.

I was told that it's corrosive. Either way, it's not like it's a pain in the butt to clean a bolt-action rifle.

Holy crap that hungarian stuff is most certainly corrosive! I also fired some of that hungarian 7.62x39 in my SKS, and it is SUPER corrosive...I can now tell where I missed cleaning out the magwell because it is leopard spotted with orange, something that has never happened with the czech surplus...

there are 2 weights that I have come across in the Hungarian 7.62x54 surplus-the heavy ball that has yellow bullet tips and comes in wax paper and string wrapped packages with bullets in the 180 grain range. The other hungarian comes in triangular cardboard boxes and is on really poopy stripper clips, as Rohann mentions. I think it's bullets are in the 150-160 grain range but not really sure. I do know that it kicks a LOT less than the heavy ball in my M44...

SIR stocks some soft point hunting ammo too(Bell and Igman methinks) but at 20 bucks a box, I haven't bothered yet...

Well I put a few patches with Hoppes #9 powder solvent down the barrel and pulled patches through until they came out clean. Is that enough for corrosive ammo? The bolt face and body is completely fine, but the handle is showing signs of rust (probably from the humidity and rain when I went shooting). I oiled all metal parts so hopefully everything functions properly.

Geez, thanks for the info! I'm not worried about the corrosiveness of the rounds as I shoot X39 SKS cheap ammo and am used to a soap and water wash down. Rohann, when using the corr. stuff, at the range, I soak the front end of a bore snake with Windex and pull thru the barrel a few times, when finished. Then a full strip at home with soap and hot water, then into a Ed's Red bath, dry and lube with Breakfree CLP. Could be excessive but I don't shoot that much and the rifles sit around. Does any body sell this X54R stuff in the lower mainland? Canam? I checked levers page and didn't see any. Thanks appreciated. Pete

Give Lever Arms a call. They have a lot of stuff that's not on the web site.

To be honest, corrosive ammo is really a worry with Mosins because Mosins are easy to clean and most of them already have pitted bores anyway. Clean your rifle after every range session and it won't matter if it's corrosive or not.

I'm just worried because I would water-and-soap mine if it was. My Mosin doesn't have a pitted or rusted barrel, and I'd like it to stay that way.

-Rohann

If you water and soap your barrel, you'll be doing way more to prevent corrosion than the vast majority of shooters. Well, at least the non black powder shooters. Myself, I run a patch or two of Windex down the bore and then clean it as usual. Mosins are a lot easier to deal with than semi-autos like the SKS or vz.58 where you have to clean the gas system and all the various nooks and cranny.
