Picked up a spam can of 7.62x54r today. Trying to figure out the origin of it and date. I can post pictures of needed. The fan had two wires coming out the top to help open the can. Can is white in color but appears white washed as the I can see green underneath the white

Agreed there’s no mistaking it’s Chinese, I need to see the numbers marked on the cans or the head of the bullet. It’ll be. 61 or a 71 and some other number signifying the date. Factory 61 is typically the better (as far as standard spitzer fmj goes) I’ve heard of a lot of cool stuff coming out of China but I’ve only ever found pretty standard rounds. The factory 61 stuff I’ll say first hand is a way better go if it’s what you got, you can also tell if it’s got a coloured lacquer around the primer and neck.

I’ve only ever had one factory 71 round dud, probably a dozen neck splits and one case rupture smack in the middle, although they still fired alright, again not as well QC as 61, and worse groupings generally. I find factory 61 stuff a lot like russian stuff.

I would think it so, more pictures would certainly help. As for the above reply, sorry but I have to disagree. I’m not saying it’s impossible but the odds that he’d be finding Factory 53 ammo is ultra unlikely. First of all that’s not how headstamps work. They don’t stamp the name of the rifle on the head, it’s factory number or caliber in any case. Second of all, factory 61 is one of the two most common found imported of this caliber. There is a recorded factory 53 but I’ve never seen on any site, forum, or come across any Factory 53 ammo, and it’s more than likely a small run, possibly war time or specialty loads, and more likely rare. Where as factory 61/ produced in 53 would account for probably at least half the 7.62x54r ammo we get from China.

But in any case they don’t stamp 53 on heads for the type of rifle.

Factory 61 is the most likely, and that’s great news, enjoy your ammo, I find it my favourite surplus round to fire, they’re cheap and up to par with anything else in the price range and availability.

No. The ammunition type is "53式". The ammo is for the Type 53 Mosin Nagant Carbine. Try this link.

Just another note. See if you can make out the markings on the spam can. Look at the second line with the format 0000-00-00. Its lot number - year - factory number.

Also to add, and correct my previous statement, there isn’t even a listed factory for 53, it’s factory 51. Headstamps are factory over date, the type 53 insignia has little to do with identification apart from confirming what was already known with its chinese origin.

Sorry. I was refering to the 53 marking on the tin can. The markings on there is easier to identify where the ammo was made.

Okay so I can’t make out the lot number but the year and factory look to be 59-61 and the headstamp is 61 over 59, so it looks like factory 61 made in 1959
