Look like I'm getting a M44 so I'm going to start reloading for this caliber.

The plan is to use the Lee dies, these are full length only unfortunately. Why Lee makes a neck sizer in X39 but not in X54r is beyond my understanding.

Cases will be Igman.

Primers will be Win. Lg Rifle.

Powder is looking like BL-C2. I want to use spherical here.

Tips will be 150gr Hornady SP's for the .303, am I going to run into trouble here ?
I'm also looking to try some reduced loads using .32 cal handgun bullets. Hornady makes .308, .311 and .312 ones. Anyone try this ?

TIA for any advice,

Craig

I'm curious if anyone has tried reloading the short pistol bullets out of the Mosins magazine. With the interrupter in the feed system, would that help avoid feeding issues found in other platforms?

Damn now I'm hi-jacking, but I suppose it's all sorts related.....right?

If you are loading Igman brass you have to uniform the flash hole from the neck end prior to decapping, flash hole is to small for the decap pin on most dies.

I use the Hornady 123 g SP .310 (7.62) bullets and they work great. You should slug your bore first to determine what diameter bullet to use. Some guys use the 303 bullets.

Anyhow, the lee handloading kit is what I use to neck size the brass.

There is also an article here on how to re-size 7.62x54r with a 308 neck size die.

This came out the day after I bought my lee loading kit for 7.62x54r...

I got a wooden dowel, but it was too thick.... I had a sinker, but it was also too thick. So I sanded the sinker (anyone else into sanding lead?) and instead of the dowel, I used the cleaning rod from the rifle.
I pampered the ends and the middle of the rod with ductape - I'm not that crazy to scratch the bore, and everything worked out good. The grease thing is certainly a must - do, but I still had a bunch of lead on the rifling.

I can't wait for a sunny day to try my new loads.

Craig,

The 7.62X54R case body has lots of taper. Just adjust the sizing die so that it sizes about 3/4 of the neck and no more.

Because of the taper, the rest of the die will not contact the case body and you will have a case that is neck-sized only.

Works great with the 303 British. No reason it won't with the 7.62X54R.

I have used Igman brass and its the cheapest brass out there. Do yourself a favor and go to ################.com and order yourself the 7.62 x 53 brass. Its the same dimensions as the 54r except the mouth is .308, but once you run it through your die its perfect. You won't regret it.

When you bore slugging guys be careful. Mosin barrels are very soft and try not to damage the crown.
