I'm just having a brain fart here, so don't go too hard on me...

If I were to buy a 7x57mm (Chilean) mauser with a pitted bore (for the right price, of course) could I have it re-bored for a genuine .308" bullet? Also, Could I retrofit a 7x57mm mauser die with a .308 expander and have it function?

Has this been done? Or am I just throwing my money away?

probably not worth it you could get a military bbl for about 150 add another 100 for install. reboring would probably be much higher

There wouldn't be any difference in performance that would be worth mentioning. You're basically comparing oranges to oranges. The French and Swiss rounds are great for comparison. The only real advantage, is the tapered case. Tapered cases make for easy extraction but with that rifle's extractor, it would be a moot point.

You mean get a set of reamers made in .308X57? you'd need a .308 barrel blank, your custom reamer and custom dies(which I think Lee will make?)
It would be something different, but what will it do that a .308 win won"t do?
I get sudden rushes of blood now and again when I think of things like this with different calibres, but it's hard to think of something useful that has'nt been done.

A 7x57 barrel could be rebored to .30, and the neck and throat area of the chamber altered.
A 7x57 die would not work well with a .30 expander plug. Cases would be sized down way to far for practical re-expansion to .30.
This might not be a practical project, but would be possible.
.30x57 should be a perfectly satisfactory wildcat.

"...re-bored..." Expensive. Gunparts is listing used military, 21 3/4", .308, 1895 Chilean Mauser barrels, in fair condition, at $51.00US. Plus several sporter barrels at more money. $136.65US and $143.10US. They'd be less expensive in the long run than re-boring.
"...Cases would be sized down way too far..." Yep. Cases wouldn't last long either.

Both parent cases have been stretched and twisted more directions than a $20 hooker.......................Harold
