Is there something about it that makes it more accurate than other 7mm cartidges? Are you saying that if I bought two quality barrel blanks and had one barrel made for my 7 SAUM and one made for my 7 mag that the 7 SAUM would be more accurate then the 7 mag?
I also doubt that it could really be considered a "very popular" cartridge. More like there is just enough demand created by guys hanging on to it to create just enough demand that the couple sources of brass can't keep up resulting in the high cost. Brass is brass and once the tooling is built to create the various cases it doesn't cost any more for them to make these than it does for them to make 300WSM yet the cost of it is 1/4 the price of 300SAUM brass. That's simply demand and price gouging no more no less.
But then again maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's as popular as you say which would be good as it would push more brass makers to start making it which would lower prices.
I think it's expensive because it's discontinued. The result is a shortage and since there is still a demand for it the price has become stupidly high.
It's weird that it was discontinued, what I've read so far sounds like the 7WSM was a more popular cartridge even though the SAUM was considered a slightly superior case design.

This article doesn't even mention the 7mm Rem Mag.
Do not get me wrong.
I own 2 7mm Rem Mags and 1 7 SAUM.
I agree for the average hunter taking some "longish" shots there isn't enough difference.....but there is a definite "edge" for the SAUM in long range target shooting.
I got lucky with brass for mine. My doner rifle came with a couple hundred. Once my rifle was built, 8 bags of Remington brass mysteriously appeared on the shelf at Wholesale Sports when they were here. Bought them all.... Should be set for a lifetime..
Nice, my rifle came with 50 once fired Nosler and 50 new 300SAUM Nosler brass.
What are you guys getting for velocity with the 7SAUM? Bullet and powder as well please (don't care what your powder charge is).
I picked up a few hundred pieces of the Bertram 7SAUM brass but haven't had a barrel spun up yet. I'll post up when I have some data on how it runs.

To me there is no accuracy gain over one or the other with good components. I was primarily looking to do a Saum over say a rem 7mm mag due to the tikka action and the pain of running the lead out further without machining 40 thoug off of the trigger and buying new bottom metal. The appeal of the Saum to me is I can run the long action and seat the lead out as far as I need.

Guys, I can't promise anything but a while ago I found some brass for both my .284 and .300SAUM at Shooters Choice in Waterloo. I believe they also had 7mm SAUM. At that time they had lots of .300. Hope this helps. Chris
H4831sc isn't going to give top velocity. I was pushing 2900+ fps with H4831sc and 168gr ABLR and getting into pressure
