7 SAUM Brass

Aren't BOTH 7mm shorty discontinued?
Wsm and saum? Also the 300saum?

Can't find any new factory rifles made in these calibers. Isn't it what it means, by "discontinued"? Or when ammo stop being made in those calibers?

Is there something about it that makes it more accurate than other 7mm cartidges? Are you saying that if I bought two quality barrel blanks and had one barrel made for my 7 SAUM and one made for my 7 mag that the 7 SAUM would be more accurate then the 7 mag?
I also doubt that it could really be considered a "very popular" cartridge. More like there is just enough demand created by guys hanging on to it to create just enough demand that the couple sources of brass can't keep up resulting in the high cost. Brass is brass and once the tooling is built to create the various cases it doesn't cost any more for them to make these than it does for them to make 300WSM yet the cost of it is 1/4 the price of 300SAUM brass. That's simply demand and price gouging no more no less.

But then again maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's as popular as you say which would be good as it would push more brass makers to start making it which would lower prices.

I think it's expensive because it's discontinued. The result is a shortage and since there is still a demand for it the price has become stupidly high.

It's weird that it was discontinued, what I've read so far sounds like the 7WSM was a more popular cartridge even though the SAUM was considered a slightly superior case design.

This article doesn't even mention the 7mm Rem Mag.

Do not get me wrong.

I own 2 7mm Rem Mags and 1 7 SAUM.

I agree for the average hunter taking some "longish" shots there isn't enough difference.....but there is a definite "edge" for the SAUM in long range target shooting.

Hmmm, I bought the 7mag for my long range shooting over the 7SAUM because it gives a couple hundred more feet per second and I don't want the 7SAUM to be a high volume shooter because of the brass prices.
I've read that article before but must have missed the part where they say that it's the most accurate of the 7's.

If brass wasn't so expensive I'd re-barrel it with something high quality and sell the 7mag.

I'm just starting to load for it, I'm starting out with 168gr Berger VLD hunting and 4831SC as it is the load suggested by the previous owner. Next batch will be 162gr ELD-X. What are the rests of you doing with your 7SAUM? Should I be going to 175gr or will the 162's be fine? This will mostly be for hunting but I do want to see what it can do at 1000 once I get a good load built for it. I have no experience loading for any 7mm. My 7mag is starting with 162 ELD-X over H1000.

I got lucky with brass for mine. My doner rifle came with a couple hundred. Once my rifle was built, 8 bags of Remington brass mysteriously appeared on the shelf at Wholesale Sports when they were here. Bought them all.... Should be set for a lifetime..

Nice, my rifle came with 50 once fired Nosler and 50 new 300SAUM Nosler brass.

What are you guys getting for velocity with the 7SAUM? Bullet and powder as well please (don't care what your powder charge is).

Im using 140g ttsx and H4831SC. Almost hitting 3100fps. I stopped at accuracy not speed. I do want to play with it more though..

I picked up a few hundred pieces of the Bertram 7SAUM brass but haven't had a barrel spun up yet. I'll post up when I have some data on how it runs.

Where did you find that brass?
My rifle has a factory hunting profile barrel but if the cartridge impresses me and I can find more brass for less than $4ea I would consider having a better quality barrel made for it.

I’m interested in seeing how the Bertram brass performs. It looks like adg brass will also be better priced than Norma.. but we will see what it goes for once it finally hits shelf’s in Canada.

To me there is no accuracy gain over one or the other with good components. I was primarily looking to do a Saum over say a rem 7mm mag due to the tikka action and the pain of running the lead out further without machining 40 thoug off of the trigger and buying new bottom metal. The appeal of the Saum to me is I can run the long action and seat the lead out as far as I need.

Not sure if I'll have issues with seating depth if I go with heavier projectiles but right now I'm able to run the 168 Berger VLD out to the lands. I did re-shape the feed ramp slightly to let the bullet tip clear as it comes up from the magazine but it feeds very nicely.
Never thought of running the cartridge in a long action. The biggest draw for me is the short action being a little more compact for hunting.

Close one is the SAUM in an MPA Competition chassis, far one is my 7mag in the MDT TAC-21.

Guys, I can't promise anything but a while ago I found some brass for both my .284 and .300SAUM at Shooters Choice in Waterloo. I believe they also had 7mm SAUM. At that time they had lots of .300. Hope this helps. Chris

162ELDX @ 2970 with RL26

Hmmm, I'm about 200 fps under that with 4831SC in my 7SAUM. I just copied the load the previous owner had, I may be able to crank it up and find another accuracy node before I hit pressure signs (hopefully).
I like the 7SAUM but so far the 7mag has a velocity advantage. They both seem to shoot well though.
I'll have to do more load testing before I know what to expect from them. So far though I'm looking forward to trying it at 300 yards then further if the load looks good, and also doing some hunting with the SAUM.

I sent them an email, I'll let people know if there is any left after they reply.

Thanks

H4831sc isn't going to give top velocity. I was pushing 2900+ fps with H4831sc and 168gr ABLR and getting into pressure

That's why I went to H1000 for the 7mag, book showed an extra 200fps with the same projectile.
4831 was just what the previous owner of my 7SAUM developed a load with so I copied it to get started. I'm not sure how much real world difference it makes but I like 4831 and H1000 because they are rated very well in temp stability.
I'm mostly concerned with accuracy but since I do plan to shoot to 1000-1200 with it I'd like to get more velocity as long as I don't sacrifice accuracy.
