If I was building a 7 Saum from scratch (vs on an action I already have), I’d build it on a Defiance medium (XM) length action. No issues running heavies at mag length and MDT makes mags so mags aren’t an issue anymore. That’s what I’d do. I just happen to already have a R700 with a notched feedramp that I can re-purpose.

Probably one of the more logical action choices, opens up your options a bit. A polished and DLC'ed (or nitrided) Defiance would be a solid choice.
I've read that the velocity claims of the Shermans are ambitious at best - that is to say the case capacity shouldn't be able to produce the velocity they claim without the pressures being on the high side.
That said, I have no idea as to the validity of such a claim. Would anyone care to comment on this?
Lot's of cartridges and their ballistic capabilities are overstated.
From reports I've been reading, people are having no problem pushing 180 grain projectiles from ~2950-3000 fps. Of course, how fast your individual barrel, your lot of powder, your barrel length, bearing length of the projectile you are using, etc. will all have an effect on velocity.
A 180 grain Berger traveling close to ~3,000 fps will certainly perform well at distance.
Bumping this one back up. Anyone who is running a saum, what freebore did you get? I'm building on a long action and manson sent me a print with .200 of freebore for the 180+ class of bullets. I'm curious if this is enough. I'm leaning towards the 183 matchking, but will probably try a bunch of different bullets.
Dies are no issue to get shipped here directly from Rich Sherman. There are choices now, Hornady is making them too. As for brass we need to get it from an importer with the proper licencing. There is even now fully formed brass made by ADG with the proper headstamp available, much better than when I had to form my 338 SS brass starting with saum brass, then fireform.
What we need in Canada is for a bunch of us to push one of the vendors to be a distributor of the Sherman line. Apparently there are a couple different ones in discussion.
They flat out work, bunch of guys have proven it with all of the Sherman cartridges. Shot my 338 SS the other day, with 58 grains of varget and a 230 eldx up to 2800 fps, will load a bit higher next time.
So I just finished putting this together. I ended up on a 7 SAUM. I'm starting with 183 matchkings and IMR7977. Haven't shot it yet but I'm hoping Monday I can get to the range and get started with development.

I had thought I had read somewhere the Sherman short can be mag picky. Thats why they made a Sherman SST version?? So what is the difference between the SST and & Saum? SST will have less case capacity but can load longer bullets easier?
