I found a Mauser in this caliber that is great, but needs a little work.
However I don't know much about the cartridge. What does it compare
to in Ballistics as I would target shoot it more than hunt with it.

Can't say much about it for target but excelent for hunting in just about any terain depending on the bullets you want use.
Have you ever heard of a guy named "karamojo" Bell?
He shot over 1000 elephants with this cal. (wouldn't recommend it) I have hunted with this Caliber in Africa and with the right bullets there is no a single non dangours African animal it will not kill with reliability.

It was used agains the Tommies with spectacular results in the Boer/English war. I have heard some of the old-timers in SA talk about this cartrige with great fondness.
My dad shoots this cartrige now for deer and I just bought one last week myself, It should not give you any problems on most north American game including elk and Moose.
I personally don't think of this as a target rifle but as a hunting rifle if I could only own one that's all I'd ever use.
Will see If I can find some technical data for you.
Do you handload?

7X57 as a Target caliber.

This would depend on distance, It's a great caliber and will possibly give you very good groups. However , in the sport of target shooting a lot of times it comes down to equipment. That is the guy with the tuned action and custom barrel & stock will do well, and may be more consistant. however if you're thinking about long distance 1000 Meters there are better calibers. Take care and enjoy the shooting sport Bill ( for our high power I use a ROSS 303 Br ).
