Hey guys,

Just got a 700 5R and I am getting ready to reload for it. I'm looking at using Hornady 178gr. A-Max bullets. Will also be using Norma brass, varget powder and GMM primers.

Is anyone else on this forum using this bullet for this rifle and what kind of success have you had? Also, if you don't mind, what did your COL end up being.

Thanks,
PRO4X

P.S. Please keep the post clean, don't want to hear a whole lot of bull$#!+ from hornady haters and start any argument on which bullet is better. Just info pertaining to this bullet type.

I've had fantastic success with 178's out of an old Win 70 with a mystery barrel on it. I found RL15 worked much better than Varget for me. COL 2.875" Flies at 2600 with a charge of 43.8gr out of Norma.

Got the same rifle using 43.5 of varget used 178s amax with lapua cases and cci br primers!

col was 2.860 and moved back to 2.830 with much the same found mine liked the jump!

But it shot the 175 smks and 168 smks all around the same moa but fav was the 175 smks

I have Milspec myself and I know that the there is a lot of room in factory configuration to reach lands, bit too more like for my taste, therfore longer bullets will be a good choice if you are not blueprinting/ trueing the action. I like to seat the bullet as close to the lands as I can if I load with bushings. I try to stay at .001-15

Hornady Should be long enough to park it close to the lands.
Good luck

178 A-maxes were my favorite for a long time, had them going 2650 ish with varget and a cci BR2 or fed 210 match, but i have converted to Berger 185 VLD, way better BC (.549 vs amax's .498(If i recall correctly)), you would likely have better performance with them to 1000 than the 178 Amax

what is your twist rate? depending on that maybe you could do a 190 VLD

30 cal 190 Grain Match Target VLD has a G1 BC of .570 and G7 of .291 and they claim a 1 in 12 will stabilize it, i have a box of them but have yet to try them in mine which is a 1:12 as well

Oddly enough, I found that crimping with a Lee FCD shrunk groups by 40% with the 178's and 175's. Not saying it's a dead winner, but it worked for me against all skepticism.

They are a good bullet, but better ballistics can be found elsewhere. My 700 5R didn't like them much but yours might be different.

A fast shooting 155gr Scenar or going up to the 185gr Scenar or even the 208gr Amax might be a better choice (not sure if the 200+ gr bullets will work in that barrel though). Hornady also has the new 178gr and 208gr BTHP match which are also supposed to be slippery (I need to find a box of each myself!).
