Looking at getting a 700P in 308 in a week or so, but was wondering what other rifles I should look at before I get one. I looked at a T3 Tactical in 308 it was a nice rifle, but the short tube on it kinda scared me, just for the fact that I want to be shooting 600+m and figured that it would be less accurate than a 700P. Am I correct in beleaving this? I have never seen any Savage LE before, so I cant comment on them. How are they? Thanks for your help! :sniper:

EDIT: I never knew the T3 came in a 24" tube, the one I held had a 20", this may change my mind!

Not necessarily. Sure, there'll be some difference in the muzzle velocity between a 20" & 24" barrel but at 600 meters or yards the difference may not be all that significant in terms of wind drift depending upon bullet choice and other related factors. Past 600 meters or yards every bit of extra velocity you can muster to reduce wind drift will be of advantage.

There's BIG difference in price between the Tic-Tac and 700P. The Remington has the advantage as far as aftermarket accessories are concerned.

If the Savage LE is an aotion it's worth a look if you can find either of the HS Precision or MacMillan stocked models. However, for the same amount of money or less you could buy a 700 SPS Varmint and and aftermarket MacMillan A series stock and still have a great platform to up-grade as necessary.

The tik-tac is OK, but ridiculously overpriced - it's getting into custom-gun territory. The Sako TRG-22 is also very expensive - moreso than the tic-tak, though I do think it does offer a bit more value (bang-for-the-buck).

Still, I think I'd put my money towards a custom gun than either of those.

Barrel length will not affect accuracy and if you're concerned, go with the 24" option on the Tikka. Harmonics may actually be less problematic with a shorter barrel.

They are more expensive than a Remington or a Savage, but they need nothing. They are outstanding right out of the box and they are the smoothest action you'll find. Be happy with what you buy because you are pretty limited on after market accessories.

I also find the people that bytch the loudest about Tik Tacs have never owned them. I have had 2. They are fantastic.

Had is the opperative word here. If they were so fantastic why do you refer to them in the past tense?

I've got nothing against them. Just curious as to your reason for selling a "fantastic" rifle?

Anything factory produced that rates as "fantastic" stays in my posession unless absolutely forced to sell.

I have a 700p in .308, accuracy is definitely not an issue, probably not with the savage or tikka either. It all comes down to personal preference, however, I know there are many aftermarket options for the 700s.

If you are looking for a precision rifle all set up with an adjustable stock, trigger, proper bipold, detachable mags, rail, & muzzle brake the TRG-22 is well priced and I'd go so far as to argue cheaper than a custom build you will wait months on end for.

Had a savage 10fp...sold it. Had a Remington 700P....sold it. Have a Sako 75 Varmint in .308....I will never sell it!!:D IMHO for only + $500 more, you get a far superior action and rifle. sub MOA out of the box and it feeds so smooth you wonder if it picked up the next round....love it.

That being said I know a lot of long distance shooters on the Remington platform but they have dropped twice the cost of a Tik Tak or Sako Varmint to match performance.

I have a bunch of these overpriced Tikkas, that out shoot every other factory rifle I own, and dumped my Milspec, 10fple,etc... and no need to go on, but the others would not run with the Tikka rifles, that is factory rifles.

I do not know what they do to them, but they shoot.

Nice, beautiful, pretty, maybe not but shoot, yes they do!

I don't own any 700 nor Tikka/ Sako but I have handled and compared both. Tikka and the Sako is better built, better craftmanship and everything including the bolt fit together better.
Simply put they are better in terms of quality.

Only benefits on the Rem 700 is after market accessories and parts.

The Tika rifles are "pretty" ugly. I don't care for the look of them at all.
I've had really good luck with my 5r so no need to change it.

MUGEN hit it on the head...more after market..and if you handload the 700p is a tack driver...the Savage Model 10 is great out of the box you just need to find one without the factory stock..hell even the choate is a big step up...for the price of a tikka you could get the rifle and decent glass...

Oh....puleeeeze. A Savage with the Plaster Disaster is only a small amount of money away from the much improved HS Precision equipped model. If you're that hard up for cash, stick to shooting rimfire.

I have made up my mind on the 700P, now should I get the 308, or 300 wm?

I'd go with the 308. Its more than adequate for 600+. It will be cheaper to feed and more pleasant to shoot. Quality factory match ammo is available. There are better choices in brass. And latter on down the road, when you go to re-barrel, there are more caliber choices with that bolt head.

.308 to start. Get a 300 wm later if you want one.
Why the 700p and not the Remington 5R milspec? Don't get me wrong I like the 700P and would have got one if the 5R wasn't available.

The 5R is the same price maybe cheaper if you look around. Also availability right now is very good, which won't last.

Get the 5R now in .308 and the 700P later in 300. Best of both worlds. :)

I just sold a tack driver 300 wm, but i sold it for the reason, the cartridge eats barrels and the cost of shooting it. A whole loyt more bark for a slight more performance over the 308.
I like the 300 wm, I use one for a hunting gun.

A 308 barrel is goos for 5-8 thousand rounds, a 300 well 1500 will pretty much do it in, and on those hot days even less when shooting at a pace or a match.

But hey the 300 is great
