Hey guys,

I am trying to decide between the two mentioned above in .223. The varmint has a 26" barrel with 1:12" twist, the tactical has a 20" with 1:9". From what I have read, the faster twist will better stabilize a heavier bullet. Would the longer barrel with a slower twist be at all comparable? For now I will be shooting out to 200yrds, but I don't want to limit myself for longer distance, should I have the opportunity to go further.

Thanks,
Adam

I would go with the Tactical, I really liked the Hogue stock, and it was a really good shooter... I owned one but had to sell it for some $$ that I needed at the time. I would get another (or the VTR) in the future when I have more funds to play with.

I have a SPS Varmint (.243), althought I might think it's great, I wouldn't have picked it if it had a 1:12" twist.

I'd Go SPS tactical.

the VTR is an other option.

Thanks for the input guys, I think I will go with the tactical.
200250126: I hope it doesn't take too long to get the tactical, or I will be doing the same thing you did.

Thanks again,
Adam

The longer barrel with the slow twist will not stabilize the longer, heavier bullets that the long distance shooters use. The low BC of the lighter .224 bullets will not be as accurate at longer distances.

Varmint or Tactical ? Why not both ?

Varmint or Tactical ?
I'd say both, check out the new for 2008 Rem 700 VTR in stores.
I just got one for $729 @ LeBaron's in Ottawa. :dancingbanana:
Good luck,
Robert

I just bought a 700 SPS Varmint in 223 and love it! Wanted a new target/coyote gun for reaching out to 300 yards and it looks great on paper so far. Enjoy your new gun!

Some great advice here, I especially like the "buy both". I really wish I could right now. It seems the tactical is the way to go for now.

Thanks again guys,
Adam

$50 rebate and join Lebaron Club

There is a mail in rebate on the VTR now for $50

Take the 729 - 10% (Lebaron Card) + $25 for the card
and your at about $680 plus tax. Then take $50 off that!!

plus savage isn't turning to gimmics to sell they're rifles such as the triangular barrel on the VTR

some thing about the price of the a savage rifle that makes it irresistable the accuracy out of them is great ask mysticplayer about how far a savage action can be pushed all before you break 750 bucks all the way to fclass do that with a remington 700 i dare you to try

honestly go to the store try it out post on your local range saying ia am looking at buying such and such a fire arm does any one have one and would you mind if i tryed firing it. when looking at guns for people who can't handle recoil trying it in the store is ok if you know what your getting but trying it on a ranage is necissary to know these things.

i'm shooting a SPS Varmint in .223, and with a 40 gr v max handload it's doing .75 inch at 100 yards, right out of the box, only thing modified was i had the trigger dropped to 3 pounds pull...

I'm interested in a .308 SPS tactical, lets just says they don't flood the market up here... It seems to me it would be perfect for white-tail next season.

i had a 700 Police in .308. At the range with hand loads i was getting under 1/2 groups. at 100 yards. The guys at the range were veary surprized for the 950 dollers you cant go rong.

i have an sps varmit 22-250. i bought it over the phone. it shot great cold, but i had to bed the stock for warmer weather benchrest shooting. the stock would move!
