biggerair: Can you elaborate a tad more on your 'long range', your game , your targets (4 foot frame, fig 11's, ISU bullseyes, etc)? This way we can figure out which kind of 'efficient' bullet will get the job done for a decent budget.
Let me explain it this way....
I built a custom .22-250 (like this cartridge) M70 Winchester with a Rob McLennan barrel in 8" twist. It launched Sierra 80 gr. MK's to to 1000yards with great efficiency and I loaded the bullets to exit the muzzle at 3000 fps give or take. My buddies did the same, but their Sierra 80 grainers were coming out at 3175 plus fps. Then they experienced jacket peeling since that velocity was beyond the design expectations for that MK bullet.
This .22-250 shot 50 gr. VMax bullets well. On groundhogs, the results were devastating....
Then on the other hand, the .308 delivers the heavier slugs like a mortar round trajectory compared to that flat shooting .22-250 80 gr. bullet. Hey, I'm only punching paper with the .22-250 at 800, 900 and 1000 yards. No need to deliver ordnance at my one way ranges.
Let us know how we can help.
