700 xcr tact compact

I know this is the precision forum but I will ask the question. My aim is to find a solid long range mountain hunting rifle mostly for deer. These are going to end up around 8lbs with a liteweight scope and rings but I do like the compactness. So ..good rifle to pack in open mountain country where a 300-400 yd shot is a possibility?

These are very good rifles as is the LTR (same basic configuration with HS stock and parkerized finish).
I don't know that you will do it at 8 lbs ready to go, but easily under 10.

This rifle will shoot accurately well past those ranges, however your load will determine an effective range for your game of choice.

There is one for sale on the EE right now...FYI.

These are 7.5lbs out of the box without accessories. Model 7 is 6.5lbs. Kimber Montana is 6lbs 3ozs, so is tikka T3 Lite. Your choice of optic will do a lot to save weight (leupold has some very light scopes compared to other brands). The FX 6x42 is 14ozs. Try Talley Lightweight rings with integral bases to keep a very light mount also (around 3ozs). Either way, you are at 1lb minimum for scope/mounts. Sling/swivels add up. If you want a bipod 1lb +.

I see that "hunting rifles" generally seem to have less twist that the "precision rifle" what effect will the greater twist of a tactical rifle have on a standard hunting bullet ?

None for most bullets used. May be an issue with ultra light and fast twist. Never tested so can't say. Slow twist and heavies isn't really a concern.

Greater twists will stabilize heavier bullets. Heavier bullets generally buck wind better, and may have better penetration on game. If your goal is hunting deer or mountain goat, I would think caliber, cartridge and bullet construction are more important determinants.
