700P 338 Lapua

Haha I have the 700 SPS Detachable Magazine in .300 Win Mag... at about $1.25 a shot I can't afford to shoot it much :p

I'm looking at getting myself a .22 though... $2.50 for 50 shots sounds more like it.

For those who are looking to rebarrel it, I'd totally recommend 1:9.4 Rock Creek with a 29" heavy contour plus serious brake but going with a chamber to take a blown out, sharp shouldered Ackley improved type round. Reloading for this cartridge costs me $1.30/round. The casing life is extended greatly. In my buddies gun, he's reloaded the brass 9 times already and still no signs of failure.

Remington Bolt

For those of you that have seen one of these guns, or up on the spec's, what is the difference with this action and a regular 700 LA? Is it just the bolt face and extractor? Is the bolt the same diameter?

I believe it is a bottom feed... that is to say you open the floor plate and drop the rounds in and close the floor plate...

... but it is the same bolt butchered up... the stupidest thing Remington has done I think. Here they had a chance to make a true "Magnum" 700 action and they didn't.... all they had to do was scale the action up a little... There are far superior actions for this huge case...

I just called Epps, wanted to buy one. I was told that it's sold out, and the price posted on the website (1150$) is wrong, and the actual price will be 1499$. He also told me that the rifles did get sold for 1150$, so someone got very lucky. New shipment is expected in a month or so. Even at 1500$ its still a very good deal IMO.
As for ammo, their cheapest ammo is 77$ for a box of 10. Remington started making .338 ammo too, and it will be available for sale in late summer - early fall, at about 80-90$ per box of 20, which is very cheap for .338LM

OK Enough rumors and speculation.
The 700P in 338 Lapua I have in my hands as of 15 minutes ago has the following.
Overall barrel length including brake, which is a radial port type is 25.5 inches so for some reason Big Green decided to use 24" long barrels 1 in 10 twist. The pleasant surprise was the HS Precision detachable bottom metal. I guess that keeping the barrel short saved them from having to get longer cardboard shipping boxes made.
The bolt sports an AR15 type extractor that compromises the old 3 rings of steel thing nicely, but as long as they have the insurance....
The price I am charging for 1 properly bedded and trigger tuned is $1695.00 plus gst and shipping if needed.

Wonder when Savage will release their own 338LM?

PS I am with Guntech, Rem has dropped the ball by not going with a true oversized action. They have been critical about 'smiths doing these very same mods for years. Unsafe and all that. Now they are doing the same thing. Strong enough? Sure, but that is not the point.

Silly that a box is likely the reason for the short barrel. Why not just have the brake threaded and off the barrel so that it will still fit the box at 26" - OAL 27.5"???????

Since there is nothing wrong with moding the bolt head (??????), why not just rebarrel a RUM action with a better pipe for the same coin?

When was the last time ANY manufacturer openly endorsed modification to any of it's as delivered products except by their own "licensed" or "authorized" technicians or service agents? To do so would obviously open themselves up to huge liability issues that no manufacturer could reasonable expect to assume.

I agree. An over-sized action would have been nice but isn't absolutely a necessity.

In the end, it's all about the money. Pure & simple. The economics of doing this conversion on an existing platform outweigh the safety concerns of the few in the minority.
