Im looking for opinions on which is the better long range rifle for 100 yards.

Its a toss up between the 5R and the 700P.

I know the 1-12 twist in the 700P is not well suited for 175SMK's but have also heard that some are using them in there 1-12's and doing quite well.

On the other hand the 1-11.25 is well suited for the 175's but then i have heard load development is harder with the 5R.

I dont mind the load development stage just want to know which is the better buy for 100 all the way to 1000 yards.

The one with the longer barrel is better for 1000 yds. Should have 26" plus.

My Causin had on in San diego, he had the older rem700Pss in 5R, he had to pay $200 more for that option, there isn't any result show that there more accurate than the regular 6 lance right hand twist, or less fouling, the reguler rem700PSS one broken in, it will delivered less than 1/2" accurate with factory with sand bag shooting and even better with reload.

Newbie question...whats the differences between the two, the 5R and the 700P ?

The 5R means that the engraved rifling in the barrell has a smoothed radius to the edge of the milling, which translates to less engraving transfer to the bullet wall. Basically you have a smoother bullet coming out the bore, which gives a slight gain in ballistics.

The 5r rifling profile is basically radiusing the intersection between land and groove, I think it's like a 110 degree radius. H-S Precision uses a similar process which they call the 10x rifling, but we like the six groove design, 75% land 25% groove. I like the idea of radiusing the corners because it not only helps on fouling, but it creates a tighter seal between the bullet and the bore, therefore better velocity and a smoother ride. Hope that helps ya out.

5R They stole the design from the Russians is what I have been told. Mike Rock made the originals for the M24 for Remington, but Remington now makes there own. Both Rem and Rock bbls are great as well as the Obermeyer(If you can find one). A few guys out on the West Coast are using the Rock bbls for HP Comp. but Krieger is the big name here. Rock 5R is also the Stock bbl for the Armalite AR10T.

I haven't had my 5r long but there didn"t seem to be much problem with load develpment. It shot most factory ammo ok and with 155 lapua's with 46.2-46.5g varget it shoots great, one hole at 100 yards 3 inch at 700.

I had a chance to fire a Rem 5R this past weekend.

It was brand new out of the box. I must say the fit and finish is really nice. The stock fits into my hands very nice, the bolt was smooth, but the trigger sucked. It had to be at least 5 pounds and it affected the group... without a doubt.

However, with that being said we still shot 1 inch groups with no load development at 100 yards.

With a lighter trigger, some load development, and better conditions (it was cold and windy Sunday morning)... it could have been better. We finally gave up because of the weather and didn't go past 100 yards.

To sum up... if I had an extra 1200 dollars, plus another 600 -800 for a good scope, and what ever it costs to have a Remmy trigger tuned to 2 pounds, I would by one. But right now, a Savage heavy barrel, IMHO, is a better bang for the buck. However, more testing :sniper: is needed for me to write off the 5R completely.

So, it gets 3 empty casings out of 5 on the rating scale.

I think the difference between the two is 5% of the equation and the shooter the other 95%. Unless you're putting them all through one ragged hole I don't think you'll notice an real difference in the field. That said if you want to be cool get the 5R, I did! :dancingbanana:
