hi,

I have a 700 varmint in 22-250 that shoots great. I tried putting 60 grain v-max bullets through it. The local shop said they should be fine. 6" groups @ 100y. The only thing I can think of is twist rate problem or bullets retarding. the paper holes looke a bit out of round. Any ideas? thanks

Well 60gr should be right on the edge of stability, so that's probably your issue.

Really, the 22-250 is more designed for lighter, faster bullets

yeah,

I wanted to reach out a little farther and buck the wind. If its too heavy I'll have to drop back to 53 gr. thanks.

just an update,

I picked up some moly coated/50g/v-max. they shoot 5 shots touching:). I pulled the 60 grainers. I bought a hammer style bullet puller. I was carefull using it and it still cracked after about 15 rounds. I used my lathe with shell holder in 3 jaw and tailstock to pull remainder. Should have thought of that first. Has anyone gone to the trouble of listing what brands/grain weights shoot well in various rifle calibre/ twist rates? tyhanks for the help.

I have a Savage model 12 VLP (22-250)stainless heavy barrel with 1 in 12 twist that shoots 60g sierra hp's excellent. In fact, behind 39.6grains of W-760 these are the best bullets (so far) for accuracy, but it seems to shoot almost everything I've loaded very well.
I believe your 700 is 1 in 14 twist and like "Prosper" said ,It may be getting a tad heavy for that rate of twist.
