700v twist rate/60 grain v-max
hi,

I have a 700 varmint in 22-250 that shoots great. I tried putting 60 grain v-max bullets through it. The local shop said they should be fine. 6" groups @ 100y. The only thing I can think of is twist rate problem or bullets retarding. the paper holes looke a bit out of round. Any ideas? thanks

jay

It you are getting 6 inch groups it would appear the factory twist is not fast enough. Don't bother using that bullet. Try a shorter bullet.

If v-max bullets are anything like the A-Max bullets they like to be seated out to the lands.
Did you shoot any other ammo the same day to see if maybe the scope is pooched?

I shot a hog at 100y in the afternoon with a factory 55g. thats the only confirmation of the scope. the shooting package (scope, mounts, gun) has been reliable for three years. I'll be back to the range asap to confirm scope and new hs precision stock with more ammo.

Twist rates from Shilen.

- 12: for bullets up to 63gr.
- 14" for bullets up to 55gr.

You probably have a 14 twist barrel.... the V-Max and A-max bullets are long and a 60 grain probably won't stabilize in it.

Dennis is on the money here. It is rare to find a 22-250 with a 12" twist. Most are 1-14" as issued from the factory. This will seldom stabilize a long bullet like the 60 A or V-max. Regards, Eagleye.

thanks guys,

This is what I figured. Should have done my own homework before I loaded 100 rounds. Anyone got a bullet puller?

just an update,

I picked up some moly coated/50g/v-max. they shoot 5 shots touching:). I pulled the 60 grainers. I bought a hammer style bullet puller. I was carefull using it and it still cracked after about 15 rounds. I used my lathe with shell holder in 3 jaw and tailstock to pull remainder. Should have thought of that first. Has anyone gone to the trouble of listing what brands/grain weights shoot well in various rifle calibre/ twist rates?
