I was lucky? and purchased 2, 71-84s with uncut barrels, nice bores and original sights, trigger guards, butt plates in other words
all metal parts are matching to the specific rifle. Stocks and mag. tubes have been cut and middle & muzzle bands are missing.
I know I can buy new stocks state side, but there goes any originality. A muzzle band seems next to impossible to find, I would
however like to bring them back to "original" configuration / as close as possible. These guns with uncut barrels are getting scarce IMHO.
The question I pose is this, what would you do in these circumstances? Any opinion / advice will be appreciated. --- John

Well, since you are asking for opinions here is mine.I have had the good fortune to own a couple of these old gals, one is a M71 single shot and the other one a 71/84,both have been shall we say "modified".The single shot very tastefully done many, many years ago,it was originally my grandfathers. This rifle has given me a lot of happy shooting over the years and will definitely remain the way it is.The 71/84 was done over in a somewhat haphazard way, again many years ago by whomever. Not a very professional job but the rifle still performed flawlessly and again I got a lot of use out of it before selling it off to fund other milsurps. This is just my opinion but if you are worried about not being able to restore these rifles because of the originality aspect perhaps accept them for what they are and enjoy them in their present state.Again, just my opinion.

These are my favourite "milsurps" at the moment, that's why I have 3 of them from each of the Prussian arsenals: Danzig, Erfurt and Spandau.
They are a lot of fun to shoot and quite accurate.

Good luck with you restoration project, I guess the magazine tubes will be the hardest if not impossible to find.

Thank you all for the advice and links, I think for now I will simply put things back together
and use as is. I'll keep an eye open in EE here / shows for possible parts & pieces.
Those are nice rifles Polaris - thanks for posting. Now on to the next problem (ammo). Probably
re-do some 45-70 cases, at least it seems reasonable cost wise.
bjm. I would certainly like to see that "tastefully" gun of your grand-fathers - any chance of a pic.
All take care --- John
