The piston should not rust and pit like that unless you get your rifle wet and store it when wet? did you store it in a dry place? are you the first owner? Norinco ammo who knows?

I use steel wool to clean the gas piston on my XCR. I recommend it. And I agree with everyone else, that your pitting looks more like carbon build up. Happy cleaning!

Have you checked to see if it's a buildup as opposed to any pitting or erosion? If not, get some solvent and brush per the above suggestion first. If it is pitting, I'd drop the Norc ammo and switch to something else. What's the total approximate round count on your MR1?

That is not normal, when i clean mines, i get a black dust that is easy remove with a brush, dont shot chinese ammo buy good ammo or roll your own, they say non corrosive but would not trust them... JP.

Normally, gas parts are chrome plated or even full stainless steel, I wish they are on the MR1.
Just to say as many nutters said, should be carbon build up.

I've put a couple thousand rounds of norc 5.56 through a bushmaster, no issues at all. It's slightly dirtier than domestic stuff, but not corrosive. It is loaded hotter than typical federal or remington .223 though.
