Is there a big difference between the Hornady 75gr. A-Max's and the 75 gr. BTHP's? I have a Savage with a 7" twist and am just starting into reloading. I picked up some 68 gr. BTHP and 75 gr. BTHP's to try out. The A-Max's seem hard to come by, but was curious for those that reload these whether they are that much better or not.

This would be for ORA type shoots.

It all depends on what you want to do with the rifle. If you want to shoot varmints and paper at longer ranges, then the amax is much better. it comes apart like a varmint bullet, and has much better ballistics, so it flys flatter, and bucks the wind better. if you are just going to shoot paper inside of 500 yrds, the bthp should do fine. Higginson's always has lots of hornady bullets, and they ship.

For shooting long range you want a bullet with the highest BC. 75 gr HPBT have a BC of .395. 75 gr AMax are .435.
Since you have a 1:7 twist why not try some 80 gr AMax with a BC of .453
There have been some really good scores shot with 80 gr bullets out to 1000 yards or 900m. See the DCRA results page for the .223/5.56 challenge.

I spoke to Higginsons about some A-Max's but they were out and weren't expecting to order until next week or so. Everyone I called doesn't seem to have stock, unless you know of someone who has stock on these.... I would love to get some 80 gr. A-Max's at some point and it is definately on the list.
