Howdy all, back from Town an got some .311 hot cors 150grain, an topped up on H4198 as il use it now for 7.62 - 222 and .375 win.

Does anyone load with this 150gr an 4198 combo for a Bolt gun?

adi data is 22.5g to 24.5gmax with 150g bullet........

i certainly think this 150gr round is going to be the medicine for the Sambar- its Legal- (has to be over 130gr So alot of Factory is on a technical OUT)

an if i can get some more or better than 24.5gr which was about 2045? FPS, i am fairly confident the Speer will expand enough out to 200m myslelf- with the more resistance the better.

anyway, keen to hear any tips or experience with bolt guns an 4198 an im shootin em out of a Zasty lkm85

thank you

That load sounds like a great place to start.

I've used faster powders with that same charge, in strong actions, which your Zastava is included in, with great results.

That Zastava is also known as the Mini Mauser MkX and is commonly found chambered for the 223 Rem, which develops much higher pressures than the book loads for 7.62x39 cartridge, because it's mostly used in rifles such as the SKS/AK47.

Both the AK and SKS rifles can also handle higher pressures and rifles chambered for the 223rem were built for them, some of which were offered on North American commercial markets.

If you work up those loads a bit, they will perform quite well IMHO.

The only issue I have with the Mini Mauser is its stock and short barrel. Mostly the short barrel as it won't allow you to wring the full potential out of the round it's chambered for.

  • Hornady Handbook #7 H4198 & 150gr @ 1700 to 2100 fps mv (SKS test rifle)
  • No 150gr data from Speer they say low muzzle speeds result
  • Have used Speer 150gr @ ~2000 fps mv works fine on Deer & Mtn Sheep at close range
  • Got Remington 799 7.62x39 M85 barreled action in Remington laminate stock really like it: https://i.imgur.com/DOun8tI.jpg
  • Also got Ruger No.1-A 7.62x39 150gr way higher muzzle speeds safely possible: https://i.imgur.com/wgtCuTv.jpg / https://i.imgur.com/m3beWUr.jpg

Your Remington 799 was made at the Zastava factory, but under Remington supervision, with tighter controls.

Lee manual 2nd edition 150gr H4198 -22.5gr @ 1945fps............MAX 24.5gr @2122fps
Just for comparison also try mag primers it shrunk my groups by 50% same powder charge.

As usual for LEE that data was just plagiarized from Hodgdon. Velocity is from a 24" barrel but it seems 2100+ is achievable from a 20". I have used IMR4198 in x39 to get there I don't see why H4198 won't do it .

I run a CZ 527 carbine but never chronied anything........killed several deer with it. BTW 3.5 gr of Bullseye/standard primer and a 71gr FMJ for .32ACP is dandy for chickens.

i asked for price a few times but it wasnt until i rang, asked about em, got told they were in , Said Mum will be around shortly...

Righto no worries..... im the type of bloke that gets anoyed with this, they are advertised elsewhere for $55 on a bad day...... why such a hike?

development done sub 20 rounds i think,, helps with 3 weights to start from i guess ha ha.

22gr no good but huntable, 23gr showed promise.. 23.5gr flew but other wise good.... 24 on the money end of game.

This Cartridge is my JAM.... recoil is Awesome. i can handle it, it drive enough bullet at enough speed........ I am in the Game!

Now that you've done this and are happy with the results, if you happen to have a bunch of 200 grain bullets looking for something to do, try 13.5 grains of IMR4198 for appx 1300+fps

It's actually a good load if your ranges are under 100 yds and will go through both sides of a Deer/Bear, even after hittin ribs.

It will completely shatter a shoulder joint if that's the only shot you've got and knocks them down hard. Need to be careful with that one though. They usually recover in a couple of minutes and get up on three legs if the bullet hasn't gotten into anything that will bleed them out.

Felt recoil on that Little Zastava will definitely be noticeable and you might want to bed the stock in the recoil lug area before shooting these.

hey just to hit this back, so i dont an wont have 200grainers but i do have 180gr speers... but they are long round nose really suited for the 303 Brit... i dont think il even bother with those?

however- im just in from a late night 'dingo' stalk an ended up firing a shot at a hind sambar just out of the tree line... i didnt hear a good thump an i seen it move off down the bush a bit minutes later,.. i was down hill of it , an it was standing on a cut in track unbeknown at the time. so i should not be 'low' at est 130m , but i may of sliced the bank before the animal, if it went to the animal..

find out in a few hours, me an dog goin back in
this was with 150gr speer.. to me she looked too relaxed moving off
