77/357 Deer

This 7pt Buck was chasing 8 Doe. I whistled 3 times to get him to stop for a shot. First whistle did nothing, second whistle stopped him behind a tree, third whistle he looked back and stopped at 120yds. He went about 30yds and piled up around 20yds from the driveway, that was nice.
120yds, 158XTP HP, 77/357, Liberty Mystic


My wife got this 5pt Buck chasing 2 Doe the next day. She said she bleated and he stopped at the 75yd tree. He went maybe 15yds towards the road and then crashed and rolled to the bottom of our property, 50yds the wrong way. Her set-up is the same as mine except the scope.



Both XTP's exited and left garden hose trail to follow if needed. With any luck I might find the bullet with a metal detector next year. These Deer were harvested in the Northeast Georgia mountains

Very nicely done! Gotta like it when you don't have to drag them all that far. Me and my Pops got our whitetail bucks on the same day just last Wednesday, both were about a 40y drag to the trail where we could drive right up to them. That NEVER happens to us. Ever!

So :cheers: to a successful hunt, an easy drag, and some venison in the freezer!

I forgot to add Northeast Georgia mountains. We are actually overgrown with pinetree's at about 6' tall. Every visit there we try remove at least 50 trees.

I kept calling people and writing letters to assist in getting Silencer's removed from our "No-No" list for hunting for about 4yrs. Wrote letters in Georgia and Florida. Florida is all game, all land. Georgia is still private land only, so still fighting a little.
 


This was a 158 grain XTP at 130 yards on a large doe from several years ago.
The 77/357 is my go to gun when hunting from the tree stands on our property----all shots are 150 yards and less---my self imposed limit for this combo.

Telesquirt, that's where we aim also but missed the heart on both. (good for me, got them both in the freezer) I enjoy the same beverage

BigUglyMan, they sound like a firecracker popping in person, keep the fight going you never know.
 
Congrats! I hunt with a Ruger 77/44...was wondering about the effectiveness of the .357 (i have three younger boys and was thinking the 357 would be a great started deer rifle due to the lighter recoil). You've convinced me its a good idea!

Seeing the OP's pictures with a wood stock I got curious and checked the Ruger website to see if that's available. I've got a 77/357 with a synthetic stock. Anyway, it looks like Ruger has discontinued the 77/357.

The stocks are the same for the 77/44 and the 77/357. They were an Anniversary present from a friend. The rifles are consecutive numbers also.

I need my neck fused so a low recoil rifle is a must. The little extra weight with the wood stock and silencer, and the silencer helps reduce recoil some make the 77/357 a perfect rifle for me.

It is a shame that Ruger discontinued the 77/ series, but if they weren't selling well.
 
A relative of mine hunted black bear and Quebec whitetail with a Ruger semi-auto in .44 Magnum. It worked for him many times. There is nothing wrong with well chosen pistol cartridges for close quarters big game.
