Also happy with my 788, but maybe there is a bias as I did a lot of work into making something fun and in 6.5 creedmoor out of it (carbon fiber barrel, carbon fiber stock with integrated bipod, modified trigger and bottom metal to shorten OAL)
I've had one in 222 for about 40 yrs. Used to shoot it a lot in informal turkey shoots. Won a few birds.
About 20 yrs ago I came across two in a local gun shop. One in 3030, the other 44 mag. Both rather uncommon calibers. i bought the 3030. At that time I was an active member of the Cast Bullet Association. 788's were the rifle to have for postal matches. My interests changed about that time an I never competed with it. Still have it though and I still cast. Maybe this summer I will treat it to a range trip. There are somewhat homely but they tend to be very accurate.
I have the 788 in .308 left hand. Haven't fired it in a few years. Being a lefty I sling the rifle on my left shoulder. When I walk with it with safety on, I always find that wearing the sling on that side usually makes the safety slide into "fire" position. But I was young in 1972, student, no money and it was left hand and .308 was a cartridge I could live with.
sought after rifle by old time bench rest shooters, I have 3 of them 22/250 and a pair in 7mm/08 they are my fav rifles the 7mm /08 is my go to rifle for deer and up and the 22/250 is the yote / deer in a pinch rifle
both 7s are wearing high end glass the 22/250 has a Leupold
never had a problem other than finding scope mounts other than weaver bases. Ebay is my friend for scope bases.
nice one up for sale on the gun dealer in 22BR and if you look hard you will find a few for sale in Canada
