Can a 788 trigger be adjusted? If not where is the best place to get a replacement? The trigger on my 222 breaks clean but the weight of pull is horrendous.

You are on your own if you alter it. The trigger/sear spring can be changed to lighten or increase pull weight. That is the easiest alteration. People have drilled and tapped for adjustment screws.
Just make darn sure it works reliably.
To remove, slacken off the little set screw at the front, then tap out the roll pin that holds the trigger to the receiver. A roll pin punch is a good idea.
The little lug to which the trigger is pinned... It is a separate piece attached to the receiver. Take care of it.

I don't know about replacements.

The sears can be reworked and a lighter spring installed by someone competent who has done it a few times. If it gets screwed up new parts will be needed and pretty well non existant.

Timney makes adjustable triggers for 788's. Canjar used to, maybe you can find a nos one somewhere (great triggers). You can drill and tap the original to make it an adjustable trigger, instructions are online these days. I've done a half dozen over the years. If your careful, it works well. - dan

If you take that trigger off make damn sure you support the trigger with a block of wood. You will break off the action stud that holds the trigger on to the action. There are videos on this on Youtube. Cumberland Outdoors does a great video on cleaning his Remington 581 trigger which is identical to the 788 triggers. HE shows you how to take the trigger off safely.
Do not attempt it until you watch his video on servicing the Rem 581 trigger. It's easy to take off but watch the video first.
Search for him on youtube. Must watch.
