So, I had to re-zero my 795 due to an "unfortunate act of quad."
I had it out to the range, and was just going for a basic 25yard zero with some crappy Remington Golden Bullet bulk ammo. Nothing I have gets great groups out of that ammo, but it's good enough for minute of gopher out to 50 yards or so, and I have a bunch of it.
After I got it zeroed, I figured, what the heck - I had some CCI Mini Mag CPRN with me that I was going to be running through one of my fancy schmancy rifles, why not give the 795 a bit of a treat. I've been getting good results from it, but never really pushed the envelope to see what it can really do.
I fired exactly one 7 round mag through it. Walked up, took a look, and put it away for the day. I just wasn't going to be getting any better groups out of it, so why bother trying.
The rig:
Bone stock 795 with a cheap as chips Bushnell 3-9x rimfire scope. Under $250, all in, with scope, rings, and redhead sling (all bought back in Feb this year) :
The Range:
25 yard line at CDTSA. Yah, I know. 25 yards ain't much, but it is good enough for zeroing what amounts to a field knockabout .22 gopher gun.
The results:
The bottom right is a 7 shot group with the Remingtons to confirm zero. Passable, good enough for gophers anyway. Consistent with what most of my .22s get out of that ammo - it really is fairly crappy.
The centre is with the CCI Mini Mag CPRN and... Dayum... Yes, that's a 7 shot group in a single ragged hole:
(p.s. - The grid lines are 1" apart, but I also held up a cartridge to the picture for confirmation of scale).
I can 100% guaran-friggin-tee, I could spend a month shooting match ammo out of my 10/22 carbine and never get a group like that.
