Hornady Superformance & Winchester PowerPoint Fail?

I was out sighting in my Weatherby Vanguard S2 in 7mm-08 after changing the plastic stock to a Boyds Thumbhole Varmiter. I had fired one box of these before in the fall with zero problems.

The second box I had 7 rounds fail to fire, 10 went off with no problems. Apon inspection it looks like the rounds that didn't go off have their primers pushed into the case about 1mm. The other primers that went off were flush. Weather today was around -20 celcius. See attached pics.

Had a box of 140 grain Winchester PowerPoint. First 4 shots no problems, then 8 light primer strikes. Same as the Hornaday. Seems the primers are sunken in.

Anyone had a problem like this? I have never had a problem with factory ammo before.

Those are very light firing pin strikes- any chance you could have changed firing pin protrusion? Have you disassembled the bolt for cleaning, for instance? If not, try dropping the barreled action back into the old stock, and see if matters improve. At any rate, I'd say the issue lies with the rifle and not the ammunition.

Just finished cleaning/thawing out the bolt. Was pretty dirty. After reassembly, I can already tell the spring has more power. I hope to try her out tomorrow weather permitting. Thx again CGN.

I will try and clean/disassemble the bolt ASAP. This is the first time I've brought her out in the cold weather, maybe that's jamming her up. Thanks for the reply.

Did you use oil on the bolt? Sounds like the oil is gummed up/frozen. Use something like Froglube CLP. Problem solved, first you must degrease you action and bolt then apply. Most of the dealers up top have this or a similar product. Cheers, enjoy your newly stocked rifle.

Use sparingly. Frog also has the Arctic version out now. A little is better than a lot.
