7mm-08 VS the .270 Winchester.

If we compare the 270 - 140 Ballistic Tip at 3000 FPS with the 7-08 - 140 Ballistic Tip at 2900, the 270 has a small, but distinct advantage way out there due to a bit more speed and a bit higher BC in any given weight bullet. In the real world, there's not much difference at all, and since 90% of hunters do not shoot beyond 300 yards, the difference is truly moot. JMHO, Eagleye.
 
The 7mm-08 is just another necked down .308 cartridge where-as the .270 Winchester is a revered classic cartridge of mythical preportions. Hell man, it was Jack O'Conner's laser! The .270 Winchester is in it's own class with a cult-like following and the status that goes with it. It's praises will be sung across the land. Long live the great .270 WCF!! :dancingbanana:




And ya, they're pretty close on paper with the 7 being a bit shorter. Pick whichever floats yer boat :D
 
7mm-08 if your reloading. They make some decent factory stuff but it will never be as numerous or abundant as the .270

270 if you don't reload...

For what its worth I have 7x57 and a 270 and they are pretty much the same thing. The 270 shoots a tiny bit flatter for me but it has a 24 inch barrel as opposed to a 20 inch barrel on my 7x57...

It can be argued that the 270 is just another necked down 30-06 cartridge.
My father shoots both, he prefers is 08 simply because he has the same rifle chambered in 22-250 so (as do I) so both rifles feel the same and you get some sense of consistency.
 
Essentially both a .277" and .284 bullets can be considered 7mm's. 7mm's are generally considered ballistically superior to .30's in that they use bullets of similar weight, but, given similar construction, their slightly longer length gives them better performance in flight and terminally.

The choice of 7X57, .280 Remington or AI, .284 Winchester, 7-08, .270/08, or .270 Winchester comes down to personal preference and the availability of the chamberings offered in a particular rifle. Some guys might like the idea of a .275 Rigby so would pick the 7X57, while another is a Jack O'Conner fan so chooses the .270, while the individualist want a wildcat so chooses the .280 AI or .270/08. Frankly, there is little that can be done with one that couldn't be done with another given rifles and ammunition of similar quality.

I personally prefer the 7x57.
Others have different opinions and preferences........they just happen to be wrong. :D
 
I like my .270 Win, then again I prefer the classic long action classic calibre. Never tried the 7mm-08 but they are so close on paper that it is hardly worth mentioning. Long hair, short hair...it's the same dog.

Well, I did all that paper comparison, and decided I would get a 7mm-08 or a .270 or a 6.5x55 whichever showed up first in a decent rifle. Result? A Sako A-V in .270Win. I would have been happy with any other nice rifle in any of these calibers.
 
Well if you feel comfortable comparing a .270 to a .30-06, you can compare a 7mm-08 to a .30-06 as well, provided you look at it realisticaly.

The way I see it, a 130 grain .277, 140 grain .284 and a 150 grain .308 bullet are equal in game killing performance. And a 150 .277, 160 .284 and 180 .308 are again equal. Of course they will fly different, and different drag, but if you were to pick one of the weights specifically for deer and the other for elk depending on the caliber, than these are probably what most folks would select.

To be honest, every cartridge can measure up to the .30-06 or the other two, it just depends on your perspective. It is just the measuring stick that all other cartridges seem to be measured against. There's nothing wrong with that, but it is a tad boring. :)
