7mm-08. your bullet choice

Hey everyone! So i just had a custom rifle built in 7mm-08 and am in love with this rifle.. So I loaded up some 140 and 160gr Sierra game kings and well they all group well within an inch. I have decided that the game kings might just be big enough for moose but thinking that for a little extra security i would load up some 150 or 160gr partitions. I was looking at there load data and see that RL19 can give me over 2800fps in 150's and close to that again in the 160's.

What would be your bullet of choice be for moose? Gameking enough bullet?

Currently I'm loading with RL17. but its hard to find load data for it other than alliant. anyone else using RL17. How do u you like it?

I currently use Swift Scirocco II's , 150gr.

They are extremely accurate and extremely tough.

The numbers in those manuals could be a bit optimistic and depending on your barrel length not efficient.However if you have a custom chamber and longer barrel, you will find a bit more velocity.

Depending on the twist rate you have I wouldn't go much over 150 and if you have a factory twist rate I'd stick with 140's.Which will be plenty fine for moose.Many shooters favor the Barnes bullets as well.If you go 140 you will likely be able to push 2800 ft/sec or so without sacrificing too much accuracy.Anything mono, bonded or partition in the 140 would be my recommendation for a do everything load.

I load my hunting round to just shy of 2800 and my target to 2750 , both being 150gr but a longer barrel and a 9" twist rate.My powder charges are near the bottom of the charts as well.

H4350 if you are looking for accuracy and temp stability.
 
140 NAB is a good moose round - deep penetration and good expansion - and most guns seem to like them. R17, H414, and 4064 worked best for us.
I would be surprised if you get over 2700-2750 with a 150 or 160 gr. I have found most manuals very optimistic too with regard to their 7-08 velocities.
 
I had a 284 win in a BLR 81, shot speer 160gr normal Spizters out of it @ 2700... killed 5 or so whitetails with it from 50 to out to 250ish yds. Averaged 69% weight retention of the ones I found inside, usually out the other side.... Would have no problem shooting larger game with a "normal" heavy for bullet around 2700
 
Thanks all for the replies.. I will looking into the swift lineup. i forgot all about them. stupid me... the rifle is a stainless rem 700 s/a with a ss Ted Gillard barrel 24" with a 1-9" twist. Custom chamerberd for 7mm-08 and heavy bullets. its not a bull barrel but is not the thin one either.. 720mm finish i believe it is. its got a boyds pepper laminate stock on it and topped with a 3-9x40mm Leupold Canadian scope. thanks again!!!

Send me a PM and I can send you an Excel sheet with my data for my 7-08 with a Krieger 9" twist on it. 150 SMK ad SC II's both were the best shooting bullets in mine. You should be able to get approx 2750-2800 ft/sec and very good accuracy with that set up. I use W760(H414) and H4350 for my loads.

If by "chambered for heavy bullets" you mean that it has a long throat, you might need to use a heavy RN bullet like the Hornady 175 gr RN to get near the rifling and get your best accuracy (although it already seems very good!). A 1:9 twist is fine for that bullet and most if not all other 175's. A 150 gr Spitzer could be quite a distance from the lands at standard max OAL.
 
Hey andy i know when he reamed out the chamber he did say that it would chamber the 160's just fine but would would have to seat the 175 a little deeper.. 160 is as high as i will go anyways and am leaning more towards a good 150.

I have a couple of 7x57's that I load for. Similar velocities to 7mm-08.
Have had great performance with 139 & 154 hornady interlocks.
Have also loaded 150 nosler partitions but haven't shot a critter with that bullet yet.
Another one that I'd like to try sometime would be the 150 swift scirocco II's.

I have had great luck with 140 gr accubonds and varget. Chronographed at just over 2800 fps. The rifle has only killed deer but I would not hesitate using it on moose either. I have a 300wsm so that usually gets the nod for moose hunting. I have been interested to see if anyone has luck with 150 gr LR Accubonds but havent heard much yet. The 150 swifts would be awesome to try but I can never find any to give it a go. For hunting I am sure anything 140-150 gr would be perfect.
