I have a student here who wants to start re-loading for his 7mm.

I don't shoot a 7mm so I figured this is the place to ask.

His money is limited so he's looking for a recipe that will be good for swamp donkey and deer.

any suggestions?

I've always trended to the heavier side for my 7mm rem mag. My buddy actually invented the load and it was 175 grain nosler with a stiff charge of H4831. Shot under an inch in my M700 classic. You can substitute the nosler with a hornady interlock with the same results. Chrono at the range was 2750 -2800 for this load.

Sorry fellas, typed it in a rush

7mm rem mag in a Rem 710

Ranges up to 300 yards

AAAAHHHHH EEEEE:eek: Burn that 710 quick before it falls apart on him.;)

Sorry that wasn't helpfull

I'd try a 160 gr nosler partition or accubond, they'll dump anything. My dad dropped an elk at 300 yards in '05 with a 7x57 shooting 160 noslers passed through both sides including one shoulder blade. IMR 4350 or IMR 4831 are good all around powders

I've got a box of Hornady 154. This should be a good all rounder. My buddy is helping me work up loads so I don't have all the info with me (if he sees this he may join in). I will say however, that heavier bullets seem to group better. Best so far has been 175gr.

LOL

I know, I know

I showed him the Savage 111 package but he said that when he shouldered the 710 it felt better.

Hard to argue with a young fella that has that kind of logic.:)

Makes me look at the 710 in another light. To a 16 year old, its a moose killer in the $$ range of what a part time high school student can afford.

Thanks for the recipes.

Get a good load with a 160 Partition or Accubond, and he'll be ready for any non-dangerous game that he may want to hunt. I would be looking at Reloder 22, H4831, Norma MRP or IMR 7828 for powders. Regards, Eagleye.

I would have him practise with cheaper loads but sight in and hunt with the 140gr tsx.I have seen the results of this bullet being used on deer, moose and elk and I was very impressed.Penetration and expansion was very good and they are quite accurate in most rifles.

Using lighter weight bullets is a bit of a waste in the 7mm RM IMO. The 280 and 7mm08 can mostly keep up with the lighter ones, while using less powder

So how many 280s and 7mm-08s have you owned that would push a 140gr tsx at 3300fps like a 7mmremmag will?

work up to a 160 gr. Nosler Partition or Accubond over 65 grains RL22 or H4831sc, with W-W brass and a Federal 215M primer

7mm rem mag. Max load with 140 gr partition is 75gr of Retumbo. 3107 fps
280 rem Max load with same bullet is 58 gr of 4350. 2927fps

Neck and neck

I notice that you did not answer my question.I certainly hope that you aren't naive enough to judge the ballistics of two cartridges based on one loading manual.I have personally chronographed the 140gr tsx out of a 7mmremmag at 3300fps.But since you like to use the data from manuals for your comparison, here is data from four of my manuals.

Using the nosler manual number four.

max velocity with 140gr bullets

280rem 3152fps

7mmremmag 3340fps

hogdons 26th edition manual

max velocity with 140gr bullets

280rem 3009fps

7mmremmag 3232fps

sierra second edition manual

max velocity with 140gr bullets

280rem 2900fps

7mmremag 3100fps

speer reloading manual number nine

max velocity with 145gr bullets

280rem 2976fps

7mmremmag 3152fps

There have have the results from four other manuals and the difference in velocity is approximately 200fps,hardly neck and neck.

Well, he,he

After I printed off the advice and gave it to my students they went across the road to HomeHardware at lunch and bought rounds and powder .....what they needed.

They came back with 150 partitions:rolleyes:

So much piss and vinegar built up :D

Now I guess I'm the one re-loading for them for till they get set up lol.

They asked me if 150 grain partition were ok for wild pig:p AHHH, the perpetual learning curve begins anew.

Man I love my job

Thanks again
