Hey guys, looking for some opinions.

I’m debating between 7mm PRC and .270 Win for an all-round hunting rifle. Mainly for whitetail, elk, and maybe mule/moose if I ever pull a tag...

What I’m after:
  • Lightweight 20-22" rifle
  • Good for bushwacking / long walks
  • Max shots 300 yards, maybe the odd 500
  • Budget around $1000, including a scope
I’ve seen Cabela’s offers on the Savage 110 Apex Hunter XP with Vortex Crossfire II in .270 for 900CAD.

Appreciate any feedback or budget setup suggestions.

I own both a 7prc and a 270 and i would be picking a 270 or even a 308.

308 is super versatile, can get 150s-180s, shoots flat enough, stopping power for big game, light on recoil, short action.

FWIW i live out west and have two friends with everything under the sun - 300 win mags, 7 rem mags, 270's, 30-06 and they both choose 308.

308, 7mm-08 if you feel you need something flatter shooting or lighter recoiling. 270 is a fine cartridge, but shorter actions make for better handling, lighter rifles. Despite what YouTube and gun magazines will tell you, 7mm PRC is overkill for most American game, and at $100/box for that BS, you appreciate the others when you can shoot a lot more on a budget. Factor those savings, into a better optic for your rifle. Those package rifles, generally have bottom tier optics and rings, and if you are going to be hunting those conditions, it's worth spending a little more, for something much better.

You could pick up a Stevens 334, for around $500 and spend $400-500 on optics and rings, and have a much better package for the $.

If I was hunting in the bush for big game, I would be using a Remington semi-auto, carbine barrel, chambered in the 30-06.
The guy says he will be shooting to 300 yards and possibly out to 500. There is no “bush” rifle in any of that. A rifle that will kill an animal at 500 yards will certainly do it at 5. A Remington semi auto seems like an awful poor choice in the OP’s list of needs.

I was only responding to the title of his thread................me very bad!

270 Winchester all the way…it will do 99% of everything you need to do. Secondly if you get separated from your ammo on a hunting trip for any reason you can walk into any Crappytired, hardware or gun store and buy 270Win right off the shelf. Recommended by our dearly departed rifle guru Jack O’Conner. No relation to Jack Sh:t…..

Any of the 3 mains ie; 270W, 30-06Spr or .308W will cover your needs perfectly.

Personally I don’t see the need of the CM or PRC speedsters given your “bush/walking” parameters specifically.

Any of the above have a lot going for them. Tons of factory ammo avail virtually anywhere, double the barrel life of either the CM or PRC and all three have a long proven track record for most NA’can game.

For what you describe I would say that the PRC is a waste of time and money but I would never tell a person not to buy a gun they want.

But for mostly carrying, hunting brush, cuts, mix of open and timber any standard cartridge will fill the bill. 6.5CM, 7-08, 308, 270, 30-06 or any number of cartridges in between
