7mm PRC vs .270 Win — Best Bush Hunting Rifle

$1000 all in I would look for a used husqvarna, or similar, probably got something in the $500 range and then spend $500 on a used quality scope like a Leupold 2.5-8 or similar. My friend bought a husqvarna 1640 featherweight in 308 with a scope I think Bushnell of some sort for 800 and some dollars and that rifle is light compact and reliable!!

Hey guys, looking for some opinions.

I’m debating between 7mm PRC and .270 Win for an all-round hunting rifle. Mainly for whitetail, elk, and maybe mule/moose if I ever pull a tag...

What I’m after:
  • Lightweight 20-22" rifle
  • Good for bushwacking / long walks
  • Max shots 300 yards, maybe the odd 500
  • Budget around $1000, including a scope
I’ve seen Cabela’s offers on the Savage 110 Apex Hunter XP with Vortex Crossfire II in .270 for 900CAD.

Appreciate any feedback or budget setup suggestions.
the Savage 110 Apex Hunter XP with Vortex Crossfire II in .270 for 900CAD. BUT get it in 30-06 _ Perfect ! (y):p

Out of those 2 I'd take a .270 Win. I have taken moose at 370 and mule deer at 409 with it. I used 150 grain Partitions. Those bullets at almost 3000 fps work well for what you are after.

The .270 has less expensive and more readily available ammunition. You can get a box of 20 rounds for $32 and have many choices under $40/box. With the 7mm PRC you are easily looking at +$90/box. You should consider that because practice is very important, especially at the longer ranges you mention. Do you have a rangefinder?

Now for something a bit different. Look at the Mauser M18 in .30-06. You can get them new for under $700 and IMO they are by far the best value in today's market. Those same rifles are selling for +$1500 in Europe. Every review notes fantastic accuracy, smooth action and great trigger. They use Remington 700 bases which are easy to find and come in many different styles. They are available in .308 too, but I think the .30-06 gives you extra oomph at the potentially longer ranges you mention. Practice ammo can be found anywhere - pretty much any place that sells ammo will have .30-06 - and I've seen it recently for under $30/box.

Add a decent Vortex scope - get the best you can afford - and you are good to go. Keep an eye out on the EE as sometimes you can get a deal on a new scope.

I recently had this conundrum and have decided to go with a tikka t3x stainless .270win. putting a vortex Diamond back 3.5-10x50 on it. Have a yodave trigger spring waiting and I’ll likely pillar bed it after I shoot it and see how it does. Expecting tikka quality so probably won’t need it 🤣. Just waiting for Boxing Day! Should knock down all my table fair from yotes-elk. Anything else I should need gets .338wm

270 will do what the 7PRC will under 500 yards at a fraction of the price and recoil.

270 has taken more game then the 7 PRC has, and it will stay that way for a long time.

270 has done everything i've needed it to from coyotes to moose and elk with ease. Pick a good bullet, PRACTICE and enjoy your hunt.

Caliber choice doesn't make up for piss poor shot placement or poor bullet selection.

Same could be said for the ‘08/‘06 instead of the 270W. Then again replace the 7PRC and insert the 6.5CM and your points are still valid much to the chagrin of some folk.

All in all 6 & 1-1/2 doz of the other I suppose…
