Just wanted to see if I could get some ideas from the CGN community regarding a MR hunting rig.

All I have right now is a barrel, so I have a lot of collecting to do and I am in no rush. This rifle will eventually replace my T3 in 30.06. The barrel is a Bartlein #3 contour (Heavy sporter, 0.67" at muzzle). I have yet to decide on cartridge but was musing on 280 Rem, 280 AI, 284 Win or the classic 7mm RM. Hunting would be deer, moose, bear and eventually elk. Distances would be variable 100-500m. I do think I want to go custom.

Still deciding on an action. Controlled vs push feed. I am open to 700's, custom variants of 700's, controlled feeds like Winch m70. Any other options?

I wanted a DBM - probably ATRS bottom metal. As for the stock, leaning towards a Mcmillan A3 (as I love them), or a McM gamescout each with some form of an adjustable cheek piece.

I am open to peoples opinions and thoughts.

Thanks
BB

Rem 700 action or a good M98 variant. You choose based upon your own criteria.

7mm STW

What is the twist rate? For long range I would want an 8.5" or 9"

Would the #3 Bartlein be on the slim side for the McMillan A3? I think the Game Scout might be a better match for that #3.
Of the calibers you listed I'd go 7mm Rem Mag.

Anywhere from 8 to 9 twist you can't go wrong.

For 500m, anything from a cheap RAR in 7-08 on up will work fine. But if you want to end up stretching its legs out a little more, the 7WSM, 7SAUM, 7-300WSM, etc are a great choice for launching heavy, slippery bullets.

7-300 win mag 3100-3150fps 27 inch barrel
Otherwise 7 mag. 2900-2950 26 inch barrel
Either one throated to be able to touch the lands with a 180 Berger seated so just the boat tail sits below the neck.

But you could use anything you listed out to 600 yards.

I do agree with this. I have a senderp contour that fits great in my a3. Looks like the game scout would be better.

I'm definitely leaning 280/7mmRM as the top two

This is primarily going to be a medium range bush gun which would be light to carry. My LR hunting rig is a sendero contoured 300wsm in an A3 stock.

Wait a minute, what? Thought you said is was a LR hunting/precision rig.

If you are looking for a bush rifle that's light, for med/short range, just pick up a SS Model 7 in something like a 7mm08. You would still have 400+ yard capability.

You know what you are 100% correct. I don't mean LONG range, I truly mean more of a medium range with some ability to knock down big game. 500m range would probably be max range. If I think I am going to be going longer the 300WSM would be out. I will change the title! Thanks

7-08 is your number. I have mine for 0-600yards. Using a 145gr LRX at 2700-2800 Fps, you have plenty of punch. That's what I am using. Beautiful little set up at just under 8lbs loaded

How about just getting another Tikka T3 in 7 Rem Mag and do a few upgrades to it. B&C or a Manners stock, and Cerakote. Like this one.
