7mm rem mag/7mm/08 help please

alot of it IS hype

note that factory load ballistics on the 7mm Rem Mag have dwindled over the years.

originally it was 150 gr. @ 3250 fps (now 3110 fps), and 175 gr. @ 3000ish fps (now 2860).

A 7-08 will push a premium 140 gr. bullet @ 2800 fps, and will give similar penetration to a standard 175 gr. @ 2860 fps (Cor Lokt, Power Point, etc).

I dont think there's much of a gap between the 7-08 & the 7mm Rem Mag in killing "power". The higher speed of the Magnum gives you a bigger margin in error of misguessing the range past 275 yards...

sounds pretty warm, most loads show a 160 goin' 2600-2700 fps in a 7-08

bear in mind, if you hot rod a 7mm Rem Mag, you can hit 3100 fps or more with a 160

A 7mm-08 pushing a 160gr bullet to 2800fps? I'd have to see it to believe it. I tried hard and couldn't get over 2500 fps with a 20" barrel with 160gr bullets. I couldn't hit 2800 with a 140gr bullet, almost, but not quite. Mind you, I was using a chronograph and not estimating velocities from the book.

Edit: Out of curiosity, what load are you using?

all center fire rifles kill if you point it right. I have found that big rifles are harder on big men rather than little guys, us big fellows don't move that easy and all the recoil goes right in my shoulder. long live the 6.5x55

I currently own both, and like them each for different reasons. The 7mmRem Mag was my first gun and I probably was around the same weight as you at the time. I'd go for the 7mm08Rem and learn how to stalk closer and place your shot well. Usin the right bullet, you'll be able to hunt MOST North American game .I personallly wouldn't try it on Grizzly, but then again I do also bowhunt and would hunt bear with that.

I had my 7MM rem mag at the range todaty to sight in usung handloads. I fired 20 rounds of 162 g Amax's in front of 72.5 gr H1000, not quite a compression load but 1/16" away from being so. The first 5 or 6 were'nt bad but toward the end the recoil was really hurting. I have it touching holes 2" high at 100 yds. (26" heavy barrel, Encore)

What ever you choose, I'm sure you'll be happy, I chose 7mm Rem Mag after much research and indecision. I plan in using it for all big game, I usually shoot moose and elk with my 50 cal barrel but this coming year the 7 MM will be for whitey for sure.

Ted,
In my Speer manual it shows 38.0gr as a maximum charge with 160 grain bullets, giving 2506fps.
The Nosler and Hornady manuals do not list RL15 for the 160gr bullets, but the max velocity in the Hornady manual for 162gr bullets is 2400fps out of an 18.5" barrel.

The Nosler manual does list RL15 with the 150gr, and the max charge is 41.5gr giving 2802fps out of a 26" tube.

It also lists RL19 for the 160gr, using 47.5gr to reach 2780fps out of a 26" tube. This load would not hit 2500fps out of my 20" barrel.

Well, I get 3000 with 160s in my 25 inch 280 Ackley with good case life. Can't half an inch less case with the right powder get 2800, or is that outrageous?

Ted

With a 26"+ bbl it is not impossible... in fact doable with RL 19.... maybe (Nosler claims 2780fps from 26" tube... but most hover in the 2650-2700fps and Speer only breaks 2700fps on a few loads (24" tube).

HOWEVER... I would guess it is from a 22" tube (Tikka T3 is 22" if I am not mistaken)... THAT would be outrageous.

Look at the difference in case capacity between the 7-08 and the 280AI.

From a 22" 7-08 Rem I have been lucky to get 2850fps with 140's and 2600fps with 160's, with a few different powders.

The smaller cases can keep up (sort of) with lighter bullets, but seem to lose out when the weight goes up (308 Win vs 30-06 is a good example. Close with 150's... but 180's and 200's open the gap).

I believe it can be done.... but not at SAAMI pressures is all.

Yup, I have seen that enough times to agree with you 100%.

I have a 7MM Mag. M77 Mk11 Ruger. I find it has less recoil than my 30-06 PH. I would definately go for the 7MM Mag. The 7-08 is great up to 140gr bullets but when you get to moose & want 160 or175gr bullets the Magnum shines a lot brighter. If you are worried about recoil ther are some pretty effective recoil pads available. Just to note though my 12 & 14 yr old newphews at 110 & 130 lbs both love shooting my 7MM Mag. If you want some real food for thought look at the ballistics & bullet availability for the 30-06 it's about the best of all the all around rifles if you don't want a magnum.

the load in my t3 that hits 2800 is with win 760. and yes it has a 22 3/8 barrel lenth. it may be hot but shows no signs of high pressure. it ejects easily and no sign of primer cratering. i'm using necked down norma 308 brass and fed 215 primers. unless my crony is off thats my velosity. the spread was from 2796 to 2818. i'm going from memory so i could be out a couple of feet at the high end.
